clanchief
Can someone tell me how far apart at the ends of the U of their horseshoe type pattern.I have been placing the birds about 6foot apart but methinks that the sides are too close.I dont have any trouble with them landing, its just they land in between the shells and how close to the hide do you guys the nearest side of the U. clanchief

clanchief
Hello to u all. I have up to 31 decos which include 6 full body type 24high definition shell and a flapper,oh and 3 crows.I dont use them all normally as a rule.I get ok results with just a dozen shell and a few full bodied on the outer edge where the incoming birds might see them edge on as the fly up the brow, not used the flapper much.I would just like a little help from those that know what they are talking about, I have an old booklet which I got when I was young, and a lot of the info is still usefull,it is called "Know your Woodpigeon"by Dennis Graham Hogg a WAGBI publication,I have on order for Xmas a new book by J Bately if it is any good and should I look for another title by someone else. Can I just say that my poles which I got from ############## a fortnight ago are the best I have seen and used. clanchief
Cranfield
The layout to choose, spacing of decoys, etc is dependant on so many factors, its difficult to generalise. If I use a "U" shaped decoy layout , I have the end decoys , about 30ft apart minimum, but usually about 60ft apart. I also like two "clumps" of decoys about 50ft apart, with a floater, or rotary slightly to one side of the middle, to give incoming birds something to aim at. If the wind is from behind me and strong, the layout is close to the hide, with the furthest decoy about 25 yards away. If the wind is towards me, or light, I put the decoys further away, with the furthest 40 yards away. Whatever the layout, I avoid any decoys directly in front of the hide, I don,t want to draw their attention to me. The amount of decoys I use depends on the size of the feeding groups. Never less than 12, up to 50. I,m sure everybody has different ideas, but thats approximately what I do.
