My immediate response to the Police following that and other similar replies is.............. "stop ******* about with things that don't concern you and get on with proper home visits and reduce the many months of backlog loads of regions seem to be suffering from"! bedwards1966
Stand up to this, if my firearms department told me I could not use a new cabinet until they had looked at it I'd simply tell them to stop being daft. If they persisted I'd tell them to quote the part of the Firearms Act 1968 which prevented me from using it, or which required me to notify them of it. When they then mutter something about their policy you've won. We should not accept police farces making up rules as they go, we already have enough to abide by. I may notify the police if I've installed an additional cabinet, that would purely be so that their system doesn't flash up that I've got 8 guns in a 7 gun cabinet - but that would be a simple note in with my notification that I'd got a new firearm. If they then wanted to come and admire it that would be up to them. I would not go out of my way to tell them about installing a new cabinet, as it's my responsibility to store the guns in a secure way, not theirs. JonathanL
Not what they told me. Ask them to back their position up with a source of law. J. Edited November 23, 2012 by JonathanL

Because my existing cabinet is full up and I was going to look at another gun so I thought it might flag up that I'm out of cabinet space. I must say I was a bit surprised when they said somebody would need to come out and look at it first. Said they would phone me to arrange a visit.
