Big Al
I live in the North and I know our RFDs bring guns back and forward over the border. I would suggest contacting an RFD in N. Ireland as it wouldnt be out of the ordinary for them. I think some RoI dealers buy guns from northern dealers too. All for a fee of course! From your username I take it you are a Cork man (am I the only one on PW knows what a langer is?) so postage would probably be the preferred method. I sent a gunstock to Pat Sludds for £15stg over the summer - its cheaper than posting to UK mainland. I can suggest a few RFDs via pm if youd like or there are a few who advertise in Irish Shooters Digest. I know Tannyoky , Co. Armagh deal with Southern RFDs. They could be a good place to start. Ask for Cecil or Gavin. But be careful about their prices - they have a massive stock listed on their website but there is plenty of negotiating room built into them. clayman
The Republic of Ireland is unique in its the only EU country with a land border with the UK. This means a person can effectively walk over a non-controlled border from one country to another carrying a gun, but the legalities of doing so are no different from the processes involved in taking a gun abroad. The postal / courier etc export of a gun from the UK requires an export license from a SPIRE holding RFD. This is the same for a sporting shotgun as it is for a tank, and a fairly weighty piece of bureaucracy involving fees and administrative time. There are specialist gun shippers such as PDQ freight who provide a shipping service with export licence for around £350-00 upwards. For modest single guns this is not worth the time and money, these services are generally used by dealers to move several guns in a single consignment, or for top end exports of fine guns were a few £100s is of little consequence in the value of the gun / guns. Its usually cheaper and quicker for domestic users to import from the UK in person. The process will involve them travelling into the UK with the necessary papers to buy a gun and take it home as hold luggage, or by rail / car etc. The process can work as follows: Assuming you are a licensed owner in your home country you find a sponsor in the UK to confirm your travel to the UK for the purpose of shooting. This can be an RFD, an NGB or an estate etc, provided this is a service they wish to provide. You pay what-ever fee is involved, typically sub £100, together with details / copies of you license and guns you are going to bring to the UK. An Overseas Visitors Permit is produced that will have a validity for up to a year, and state where and why you are coming to the UK to shoot. Open OSVP are obtainable, ie a year long to shoot UK clay clubs etc - ( apply to CPSA) or they can be for specific dates and venues, ie a weekend at Lord Huffies estate etc. This OSVP has a provision on it for acquisition and use while in the UK, and this MUST be asked for in advance and on the issued permit. It can be specific to acquire a particular gun/s pre-arranged, or open saying just 1 x 12g shotgun, 1 x 20g shotgun etc., . With a correct permit with a right to acquire while in the UK you can take delivery of your guns in the UK, and then leave carrying them. Your concern will then be their legality on entering the country of destination, ie, you will needed to have arranged that they enter onto your local certification and abide by your authorities import rules. As far as the UK is concerned, they are on an OSVP and have left with you - end of UK requirements. It is also possible to take border delivery. This means that a UK RFD takes the guns to a customs point where they are handed over the customs counter ( ie exported) into the hands of an overseas destined person who carries them onward. This works at airports etc, ie you could fly into UK and as you leave take delivery over the customs point without needing an OSVP, and carry the guns onward. Just how it might work over the NI / RoI road border I'm unsure but I would be certain there is an official procedure if you enquire of your licensing authorities or customs.
