mad1
Hi all ... I hope you all had a good Christmas !! I have reworked the stock on my gun to great effect so now I'm turning my attention to the barrel It's a standard length barrel ( varmint ) but the very end is looking like it's corroded ? So should I just get it re crowned or would you recommend getting it shortened .. It's mainly used as a foxing rifle with some long range rabbit shooting ! I have seen various vids on DIY recrowning with suprisingly good effect or should I just leave the crown ?
Fisheruk
I would check accuracy before you go messing with the crown. If it hits the mark don't mess with it.
kent
I am gonna second that, if it shoots leave it. If it don't then you can buy a tool to touch up the crowning that's used in a hand drill OR rolling a ball bearing / marble by the palm of the hand with a little valve grinding paste can also clean one up. If you make a mess on a non shooter you have lost nothing as you still need a new crown cutting by lathe by a smith. to shorten or not depends on what you want to achieve, I have known people shorten 1" at a time by saw and record the outcome over a chrono to the point they are happy with then get it recrowned
