Royboy
A close member of my family has passed away and I totally forgot about my gun license. I sent it off today and it's dew on the 30th of January. Do you think this will be a problem ? I tried ringing the firearms department today but they are closed until the 2nd. It's just that I've read recently that peoples licenses have been 4 days out of date and they have lost there license. So im panicking a little
Mikaveli
If you've got a friend (with a licence...) that can hold you kit at least until you get confirmation from your local FEO, that'd be how I approached it. Sending off for a renewal with only a couple of working days left probably won't wash...
Spaniel
this is what it states on my letter ref renewal if a completed application is not with us three weeks before expirary you will be expected to store your guns with a RFD during any period your firearms are unlicensed hope this helps

Ye I've got a few friends with certificates. Hopefully it will get to them for the 2nd of Jan so it should give 20ish working days Sending off for a renewal with only a couple of working days left probably won't wash... bedwards1966
It's impossible to say, unless someone on here has a recent experience of how long your force area takes to deal with renewals. If it's not renewed before your old one expires you need to leave your guns with another certificate holder or store them with a RFD, as you would be breaking the law to possess them without a valid certificate. If this happens you can ask for a temporary certificate to allow you to keep hold of them until your new one arrives, but there is no guarantee you'll be given one - some forces do this, some don't, so be prepared to store them elsewhere. apache
Give them a ring an apologise. They realise life happens. My wife forgot about hers and got a reminder from the police about 3 weeks before expiry. She sent forms in the next day and had her cert back in about 2 weeks. They were fine about it. This was earlier this year with North Yorks.

Just get it back within a couple of weeks ! What's the law on shooting when license is sent back for renewal ? Until the one you sent back expires you are still a certificate holder so you can still shoot and possess your firearms. You can't buy ammo as you have to produce a certificate for this, and if you haven't been sent your new certificate before the old one expires you need to keep your guns elsewhere as it would then be illegal to possess them. Royboy
I've been told to always carry my license whilst shooting that's all. Don't want to end up in bother !

I like to have mine with me as it means that any silly policeman is less likely to take your guns(s) if he stops you. Technically they can seize your guns if you don't show a certificate, but as everything is computerized now and all they have to do is get on the radio they shouldn't take them. It is useful to have it with you, but it's not a legal requirement.
