JDog
I was called last week by the gamekeeper on a nearby estate. I know the estate well through hunting but I have never met the keeper who got my name and number from a keeper on the adjoining estate where I have shot for some years. Apparently the farm manager had asked him to find someone who would shoot the pigeons!! It seems remarkable that no one on the estate shot them. I would have thought that they would have been inundated with requests but that wasn't the case. I had a drive round with the keeper who showed me the blocks of rape and the 'birdy mixtures' and the areas which I could shoot during the game shooting season and other areas to avoid. I watched yesterday afternoon and went today in a thick fog before the birds had come off their roosts so I had an hour to wait before anything moved. There were lovely long belts of trees which the birds followed to a seed mix of about 5 acres. Never before have I seen such a large block. The wind was strong and after the rain had pushed through I set up along the belt in the shelter of some ivy covered bushes. I could see the birds coming from half a mile away dancing on the wind above the belt before diving down towards the rotary. Incidentally the birds on the rotary were the only birds I had out. This was great shooting and I ended up with 75 picked.
