bruno22rf
Just bought a nice Pedersoli s/s 12g muzzle loading shotgun and some Hodgdens triple seven FFG (black powder substitute) and shot and have been trawling Tinternet for a suggested load. One site says 80 grains of powder per 1 1/4 ounzes of shot whilst another suggests 100 grains. To add to my misery one site says to reduce the powder volume by 15% when using triple seven whilst the carton says to use it in equal volume to black powder !! I'm deffo confused.com.... Any advice will virtually guarantee a christmas card next year.
Vince Green
Go by the Hodgdens site and no other. Its a bulk powder so its measured by volume the same as and equal to black powder. Back in those days the powder charge was varied according to how much oomph you wanted to give it or not. There is no advantage initially in going to the top end, start playing around with the lighter loads and see how you get on. I find triple 7 quite pokey anyway but very nice, shame its so expensive. If you start shooting it in any volume you are more or less going to have to switch to BP because its about a third of the price..
bruno22rf
Thanks,Vince, but I cannot find any load suggestions on the site specifically for shotguns.I think I will try 80 grains of triple seven under 1 1/8 ounze of shot and see what happens.I paid £58 for 2 tubs of triple seven but they have no weight marked on them so its hard to compare the cost with BP.Besides this we have just had a posh new sink fitted and if I stain it (like BP can do) then a shotgun blowing up in my face will be a picnic compared to what the mrs will do to my dangly bits. What load do you consider normal for general pigeon shooting? I would say that should be just right for1 1/8oz. You can always increase it later. Edited December 31, 2012 by Vince Green
bruno22rf
I have one of the sliding scale powder measures so I guess I am going by volume not weight?
Vince Green
Yes set it on 80gr or 3 drams of black powder and it should give you the correct equivilent which is 65gr of triple
