b16jus
Depends for what use, Licence free 0.5w i vote Motorola Xtni they are superb well built and work really well. If you want to use 5w radio i recomend Motorola DP3400 its a digital radio little bigger than the xtni but 5w so will work over a greater distance. Steel100
Bazzashadow, As stated by others, it depends what you want them for. The license free PMR446 radios are available from a very large number of manufacturers and generally, of two distinct types, those for family, recreational use and those for professional use. The professional ones are generally, built to a better standard for continuous usage and will cost more, but they are license free. Surprisingly good for use over a few hundred metres range. If you can borrow some PMR 446 radios and test them for suitability it will save you money. If they aren't good enough, you'll probably need the OFCOM licensed radios - 'Business Radio (Simple UK) Licence' which costs £75 for five years. I hold one of these licences for range use and at country fairs etc. some friends use the same sort of thing, when stalking. Most radios are splash proof but if you get them too wet it can be expensive! Don't get drawn in by the silly claims that 5w radios are 'ten times more powerful' than 0.5watt PMR446 radios. As with buying a house, think, 'Location, location, location'. All the best Andy

Salop Matt
I have a pair of Cobra and there great for what they are ! Bought at the MGF 3-4 years ago and there great when I use them but they really deserve more use ! I went down the CB route to find there isnt really anyone on there anymore which is a shame as I thought it would be handy for speaking to the farmer etc when he`s out in his tractor but he gave up on CB years ago and only uses mobile phone now ! Ham radio would be good but I cant be doing with the strict operating of it with call signs and and radio speak plus the licence fees etc. So its now mobile or PMR walkie talkies for me now ! Most off roading clubs / greenlaners seem to use pmr 446 wlkie talkies now too ! ATB Matt
