rcmh
Happy new year! Random question here!!! Looking to host a bit of a shin dig in March for about 40 people. Any thoughts on possible places in herts/beds (ideally near hitchin)? Things I'm after (in an ideal world but basically want an informal place to drink and eat some hearty food).... Pub or space that serves beer (or could bring some kegs) Somewhere I could ideally get a hog roast done (alternatively good, hearty grub) A private room/area Pub games a bonus (darts etc, if only I was in the southwest then skittles would be a must!!) Any thoughts really appreciated. Not been living here long enough to find a place I think would suit!!! Ta!!

Harvey1972
Angels reply on the Bedford road has a function room. St. Michael's mount community centre has a bar. Football club. Can't think of anywhere else at the moment as I haven't lived there for 10+ yrs.
lees
St. Michael's mount has an outside area as well where you could do the hog roast.
bakerboy
Should the Herts Massive wait for an invite? or should we just turn up?
huffhuff
I'd probably steer clear of the Angels Reply The problem with proper pubs with real food is they can rarely accommodate that amount of people. For 40-odd, I think you'll be better off hiring a sports club or village hall. Alternatively, somewhere like the orange tree might cater... Microwave pub food but they have the space. I can put you in touch with somebody at blueharts hockey club? They have hall...and bar! My village hall has space...and a bar. I can send you in right direction there. Whatever you choose, I think you'd be better off down the village hall type route as opposed to a pub/restaurant. It'll be cheaper, cosier and with more freedom ...and you can just get a hog roast in (I can give details of that too) Or, I know a great little farm that has grounds, many marquees to suit 'all occassions' and a catering business attached...but they may cost a tad more
rcmh
Thanks for all the ideas all. Will have a look- going to pop down the the white horse in broom to take a look as well. Huffhuff thanks for your ideas - what is the village hall and farm you were thinking if? Farm idea sounds brilliant but would need to see their prices - do you have their contact details? If anybody else knows any farms etc that have converted barns/marquees to rent out let me know!!!! Thanks again, Rob
rcmh
Should the Herts Massive wait for an invite? or should we just turn up? This can be the tester but if it works ill do round 2. Wait for a bit of better weather and we could do an alternative Olympics... Clays, darts, skittles and croquet

Cosd
What about St Albans where we had the Butchery night? Great food and good beer! 40 people you'll have the whole pub to yourselves. I'd be more than happy to call the owners and see what they would charge you. Good chance they'll do preferential rates if I tell them it's another PW function. Cos Edited January 5, 2013 by Cosd

Idea of doing a foraging walk followed by feast sounds good. Would be great if you could give them a bell or drop me a PM with their details...? Ta! ferguson_tom
3 horeshoes in Norton, great pub and the function hall out the back is good. Sitting down eating probably hold about 50 people standing having a party 90-100 i suppose. We used in in december for my mums 50th and the food buffet was really good, bar prices arent excessive and they are pretty laid back and nice to deal with.
