Quick pheasant this morning

Recommended Posts

Hi PW massive,

I haven't been able to shoot much at all for the last few months, due to starting a new job. I dont get any time to reccy, and over the game season my only rape fields are 40 minutes away. On my days off I would drive all the way there to find no pigeons, or worse, a few, decide to set up, for nothing.

So this morning, sat on the sofa, doing work on my day off, I heard some cock pheasants having a scuffle outside in the field. I decided to quickly walk through and try my luck, and grabbed the over under. I walked to the corner where there is some thicker cover one had been headed to. I started walking through it, when saw something move in the trees, I looked up, expecting to see a pigeon flying out, but instead it was an albino squirrel heading to safety. It was close to the sun, so couldn't get a shot off in time. I know albino squirrels aren't all that rare, but the caveman inside me decided that i wanted to catch this creature and take its skin!

While staring up at the ivy covered trees, hoping for a glilmpse, there was that hurried flutter of wings behind me, and from abotu 10 ft away the pheasant broke cover and flew up. I started to raise the gun as I span, but he headed for the hedgerow and over the road. Whilst i was far enough from the road, god knows where my shot would have fell, so I had to stay off the trigger, lucky pheasant.

I gave up on the squirrel, deciding to keep an eye on that corner hoping to see him again. I walked up the edge of the field a way, hoping the second cock might break cover and fly in the right direction. I didn't see or hear anything so gave up to come back in. I walked back up to the track back toward the house, day dreaming a bit. I went through the gate onto the track, and started toward the house. From in fornt of me I heard the sound of wings beating again, and looked up. I was surprised I hadn't seen it on the open track there, but glad he had been there, and that he flew in the right direction, across the open field. As i said, I haven't done alot of shooting recently, so I was thinking I would probably miss, but took the extra second to stay calm, pull through the bird, and keep the gun moving as i pulled the trigger. Bang, the bird tumbled in the air, and hit the ground some 50- 60 mtrs away, shot at about 30-40. It twitched a bit on the ground, but I was glad to find that it was dead as a Dodo when I got to it.

Anyway, just thought I would share this with the world, probably to avoid having to do my work...

Wish me luck finding the squirrel, now im off to eat some pigeon jerky and do this bloomin work!

Cheers,

Pete
