Mikaveli
Well, finally sorted the masses of paper work for my FAC - just going for a few rifles for target shooting. I passed my probation at my target club last month, so now I'm a full member it was time to send off for my certificate. Now it's just a case of what my FEO will grant me on a first time application, whether I'll need any additional security and how many months I'll have to wait! Gives me a reason to start saving up for some new toys - might even try to convince the mrs that a nice underlever would make a great anniversary present. 39TDS
Shot a crow today, 60 yards with open sights on my Winchester. I love under levers, mine's a bit loud for me though. Hope it all goes to plan for you.
Bloke
As long as you do your homework and put a decent case for your 'good reason', you should have no problems, congrats on passing your probation!
Mikaveli
As long as you do your homework and put a decent case for your 'good reason', you should have no problems, congrats on passing your probation! The only thing I don't do is any form of formal competition. For me, an evening's shooting at the range is about having a relaxing hobby - except for maybe trying to beat the grouping of a mate I shoot with. So whilst I participate in a range of disciplines, I don't have a particular need for any given caliber - so I'm not sure how it all falls in line with a 'good reason'. In any case, everything I've asked for can be used at my local club and I attend regularly (once a week, sometimes twice).
Bloke
Target shooting itself is a good reason, for any member of a club, dependant on calibres approved for that range. Most people eventually at least have a go at one of the postal competitions - dirt cheap to enter, good fun, various styles, -.22LR a common discipline, but other calibres are available in comps such as the phoenix postal league. But you don't have to already be a competitor, if you tell the FEO the various disciplines that may interest you, and explain that you would eventually like to compete, (after considerable practice, obviously) you should be ok. The Gallery Rifle handbook covers a wide range of the more open disciplines/calibres/ shooting styles etc, and is a good source of reference and is a free download from the NRA website, you can print off any relevant data. I provided all the relevant data and stats at my first FAC application after I had finished my probation, and got all 5 firearms and ammo approved with no problems. Good luck

I haven't asked for one, but if I ever do a variation for something like an Enfield SMLE (I've been informed by the club it's almost compulsory to possess one ) - is it still a 'good reason' if I only want it as a working collectors piece - meaning I'd use it on the range occasionally, but don't have any intention of doing competitions with it? Bloke
Thanks - I'll do that. Unfortunately I don't think "because it's great fun and I want to play" classes as good reason! (I wish it did!) . I think, as long as you put it down 'target shooting', that is 'good reason', but if the FEO asks why you need anything more than one rifle,if all you are doing is practice, you may well have to specify why a .303, rather than just a .22LR. I have .38/.357 magnum, and .22LR, in both Rifle and Long-Barreled Pistol/Revolver configuration, and a .44 Black Powder revolver, but I had to justify to the FEO what competitions and classes they would come under. I do actually shoot the Revolver and .22 Rifle in postal competition, because the comp is only £8 for 6 months targets (I am still in nearly the bottom league, but what the heck! ), but I doubt if I will compete with the others for years, because it will take a 'lot of practice to get up to competition standard' . If you are going to the gun show in Feb, the UK Gallery Rifle team are usually there and you can usually pick up last years handbook/comp flyers for free, I gave a copy to the FEO with the relevant sections highlighted . There will be a similar set of comp rules covering SMLE, possibly in the 'Bisley Bible', again you can download this. Mikaveli
Well, minor update. They've cashed my cheque, no idea how much longer that means I'll have to wait... Another guy at the club posted his app off just a few days before I did and they've already contacted his references and the club - that was over a week ago. I don't really mind how long things take - I just wish I knew what calibres I was being granted so I can start slapping deposits down on a few things. The .22 I'm looking at apparently has a 16 week lead time!
