triumphant59
I would strongly recommend a vw polo, build quality is far superior to anything French and if you look for a 1.4 (The boys don't want these, higher insurance) that has fsh. Best model to go is the X-51 reg.

silver pigeon 3
Stay away from the ford Ka's complete rust buckets, shame really as the 1300 engine is pretty tough (all be it a bit noisy on the tappets). The rovers are cheap but the petrols are a nightmare with the head gaskets going pretty much on cue around 55K - 60k. Can also be repaired cheaply and then will keep on doing gaskets. I have bought and ran loads of scrappers and personally would be looking at something along the lines of Skoda fabia/felicia of Seat Ibiza, if you look for models that are year 1999 on you are buying cars made using VW technology and parts for a fraction of the price of VW. If you were closer i have just been offered a 1999 Skoda felicia 1.9Td estate for £450 with 87,000 miles and 12 months test. Now that is cheap!
