Thunderbird
I've made this a few times now with breast meat from pheasants, basically make in the same way as any other type of Thai curry but use pheasant rather than chicken. I use this sauce, coconut milk, onions and any green veg to hand (leek and aubergine in the picture) and I use plenty of Fish Sauce, bit of soy, honey, maggi sauce: And the result is something like this. It is absolutely delicious, works much better than chicken.
Mikaveli
Looks good mate - surprised to see someone eating a Massaman - not that well known over here.
Thunderbird
Looks good mate - surprised to see someone eating a Massaman - not that well known over here. I got a taste for it over there, I prefer it now to the traditional green and reds. I still like Panang though, usually do that with beef or lamb. Elby
Massaman should alway be meat (chicken) on the bone and should always have potato's in it. Looks nice though. I use pheasant breasts for red, green & yellow curry. Also very good for making pad siew. Aroy mak ma
Thunderbird
I usually use potato in a Massaman and also a few peanuts, but I also like to vary it. I've got to like Massaman so much I use it with loads of stuff. I love Tom Yum soup too. In fact pretty much all Thai food.

Thunderbird
I know Rawai pretty well. Great BBQ fish on the beach. I like that end of the island. Do you know Richard and Megumi from the dive place in Chalong Rawai? Edited January 31, 2013 by Thunderbird
Elby
Not so good along Rawai beach anymore, stinks of sewers. I worked at Phromthep Muay Thai until it shut down. I only knew one dive guy called Clive
Thunderbird
They were here: http://www.facebook....ichardandmegumi There was a great little bar with a pole (of the pole dancing variety) that punters would try and climb, I couldn't get up and damn thing but plenty of people did. Shame about the sewer smell. I've just realised last time I was there was November 2006! EDIT: A mate of mine is doing Muay Thai at the moment, talk about bruised and battered! Elby
I don't dive so can't say i know them. There are many bars with poles Happy bar Rawai beach had one, first time I went in there I asked the boss (Otis) if I climb to the top and ring the little bell would he buy everybody a drink. I'm not the smallest of people so he said yes, cost him a few quid that night
Thunderbird
I think (though I might be wrong) it was near the top end of the beach a bit before the road curves left (as you look up with the sea on the right) and it *may* have been called the Sunshine Bar, but I might be wrong about that. It was very close to a cracking but basic (aren't they all) restaurant that did great food, cheap as. Good memories. EDIT: Just googled, yes it was: http://www.intophuket.com/sunshine-bar-rawai/ Edited January 31, 2013 by Thunderbird
Elby
Know it well. My gf is here with me now and she knows the owners, it's 3 sisters all married to german guys. Think the cheap restaurant you went to is Mama's opposite Laguna night club
Thunderbird
Yes that's the place I think. If I recall correctly in the sunshine bar the girls make tips by entertaining rather than 'extras'. My rule of thumb in Thailand was if a restaurant was full of locals, eat there. In fact that's my rule everywhere.
Elby
They all do extra's Not a bad rule to have. You probably wouldn't recognise the place now, full of drunk russians buying up everything
Thunderbird
I can imagine on the extras. A lot must have happened in a few years then. Don't recall seeing any Russians when I was there. On the last visit I stayed at a great lithle place at Nai Harn beach right at the southern tip. Was lovely. Thunderbird
We used to go to one of the little places right on the beach for lunch most days, or take the tuk-tuk up to Rawai. I presume you know the place up on the hill with the shrine where a lot of Thai locals go on their days off. The restaurant at the top of the hill there is great.
