Big Dog
Maybe I never learn about the slow NI FAC administration process but I am now thinking of going for a 6.5x55. I talked to my dealer today who is happy for me to trade my Beretta 682 in for a rifle. He has posted me a bill of sale so I can start the process. The problem is I don't have my DSC1 just yet and if you want a rifle for stalking over here you need it. That said as there is little stalking here anyway I would just use it mostly in Scotland. I will also use it on the range so could get it for that a add stalking on latter. I have booked to do my DSC1 early 2007. As cash is low at present I may have to wait for a while once i get the gun b4 buying a scope. However, I would rather have a 6.5 in the safe for a view month knowing I will use it as a 12g knowing I won't use it. If you want to know why! because the 391 I bought this summer is the bee knees and for all the clays I shoot it will do me just fine. I really love my 391. I am shooting with it the way I shot years ago when I was younger. Heres me thinking all these years it was just old age that was impacting my shooting Any body any words of wisdom on the 6.5x55 that I should consider b4 buying
Dunkield
OK BD, how about, why a 6.5x55? Will it always be Roe in Scotland or will Reds come into the equation as well? Are you planning to re-load or use factory ammo?
.17 hummer
OK BD, how about, why a 6.5x55? Will it always be Roe in Scotland or will Reds come into the equation as well? Are you planning to re-load or use factory ammo? hi big dog. no words of wisdom that havnt already been said about the 6.5 but once you have one youll never sell it. its a very versitile cartridge thats able to be reloaded from the little 80grn sierra hollowpoints { fantastic on foxes} to the 180grn moose droppers. its mild to shoot , and an inherently accurate round. it has all the power you will need whatever the species of deer you stalk. get one soon

Big Dog
Thanks guys. I have shot one at the range and prefer it to the 308. Basically because I am a wimp I do want to reload once I stop buying guns . Money tight Yes I will go back to Scotland to shoot Roe, Still eating the first leg roast from sunday Yummmmeee But I want something that covers anything I end up shooting in this country speaking broadly It will take some time to get it on but I guess the saga of the .222 of 9.5 month wait, has developed my waiting ability. I up for anything My dealer told me if I couldn't afford a scope he would lone me one for a while, I thought that was a nice touch. That said I have given him a lot of cash over recent years. The old question. Do any of you have good information on reloading. My interest is .222 and now 6.5x55 but my knowledge in reloading and bullet waits etc is primative . Hunter
.222 to 6.5.. thats a big difference Having shot both, I must say 6.5 is a lovely call to shoot, although I had been given the chance to shoot 6.5X284 Bisley long range rounds produced a little 'hot' for long range shooting, I still found this callibre to be very flat shooting, not TOO jumpy, and a fairly common callibre nowadays making it good for choice and ammunition. It may be a little devastating on Roe however, but with the options of reloading, as said above, you can produce a sensible round for the job at hand. .222 on the other hand limits you to very few options, BUT it is easier to get this as a first FAC rifle for stalking , rather then jumping the gun and going for 6.5.. By the same token, getting a half way house (.243) would be very difficult due to their strict lisencing laws. There is no doubting the 6.5 is a great round, however 6.5x284 a more specialised chambering so i would not consider this for big dog. I would look at a tikka or sako before anything else. Sako are due to bring out the 85 soon and as such the 75's will be discontinued, and you might be able to grab yourself a bargin. On the other hand people could write the 85 some awful reviews (popular thing to do with a new rifle these days) and the 75 will be become a much saught after rifle. Ive never seen a 6.5x55 in any gun which wont hold 1moa groups. And most of the ones i see are holding sub 1/2moa groups.

Big Dog
Yea, as I said and as Nick said, I have a .222 this is all you are going to get over here for field shooting unless your have major fields. Also note I shoot 308 at the range (club gun). So I dont think a 6.5x55 is any jump at all. Good point on the Roe and reloading though . You do know your stuff! letting them come to me mate have you heard from him since he left? I phoned him up and talked to him a bit, we will try to arange a stalking trip sometime soon. ust get my mentor sessions complete and show my competance on the .222, then I can use it solo, or do some long range crow shooting on that farm
