recovery frames

Hi everyone

I am looking at buying a recovery a frame for use with my LR discovery the ones where a chain or strap go round the wishbones. Its an unusual use as I plan on using it for towing the Landrover behind our Steam roller when travelling to steam rallies etc.

I was thinking of buying a winch bumper or making some brackets to bolt to the chassis but these a frames seem a good alternative as can also swap between our trucks so can take either my brothers disco or dads Terrano.

My questions: are they any good? Are they safe? Will it damage my car?

We will only be moving at 5mph but traveling about 20 miles a day, normally out on the road 20/30 days a year.

Being built in 1920 and weighing 15 tons we do not fall under the same rules and regs with trailers in fact we are allowed to tow 3 of them !!!

Any advice appreciated. Tom

This probably isn't a lot of use to you but FWIW, I used to tow a beach buggy behind a Landie on an A frame & it used to tow beautifully, safely & it was VERY stable.

I don't however know if the fact that the car you're towing has power steering but without the engine running........ Perhaps someone else can comment on that?

I'd love to see a pic of your steam roller! :)

I have one of those where the chains go round the bottom arms and tighten up with a rachet strap type arrangement, The RAC used to use them, I have towed loads of cars with them and not damaged any. Just make sure you get the chains around the arms correctly, if you dont the towed vehicle will slide forward when you brake,,, yes I have done it ONCE

Same as this one http://www.smart-tow.com/legal.htm

A frames are very good saves pulling the car trailer I paid £100 for mine has new.

I don`t think it had ever been used I have used it to pull lots of cars and 4x4 in to the garage.

They are very good. They are very safe. And no damage unless the car has a very low front skirt like golf GTI.

You just have to watch the wishbones aren`t a lot higher than the front skirt.

Just make sure you let the steering lock off. Turn the key to the first position.

Have a look on YOU TUBE A frame towing lot`s of good info.

Thanks mate, took a few years to get it to that state but thoroughly enjoying it now. Saying that not many other people can say they were doing hot riveting at 13 years old, I am 23 now and this is the 3rd year engines back on the road.

The only problem you might have is, if its an older landy they dont have wish bones and I never tried putting them straight round an axle so I dont know how you fit them ! ,as for towing their great have towed cars hundreds of miles and never had a problem !.
