lap9387
Hi all, I may be working away in the next few months., based away and only home odd weekends. Ill be paying council tax on the NEW place and leaving my mrs at home. What do I do with my licence? Can I just leave my guns locked away at my old address? Ill be going back there eventually, but it's a max 12 month contract. . How does it work
Stuartph
Hi Not sure about 12 months but I work offshore sometimes up to 3 months away and my FEO was fine with that If it was me for longer I'd put them in paid storage

HDAV
If your resident at both up to you where you keep them might not be the faff for 12 months if you are back home regularly. I would keep your SGC where you have your main bank account and driving licence are.
kent
If you haven't got a stack of guns (as costs add up) RFD storage might be wise, if your guns are stolen you have to prove in court reasonable precautions were taken. Even removing vital parts putting them in a lock box in another secure location but 12mnths with odd weekends is a lot. If your wife had a cert with all your guns on it however......... If he's only working away and his guns are in his gun safe then I can't see that he's failed to adhere to the security condition. If the house was going to be empty for months on end then that might be a different situation but that doesn't seem t be the case here. In the event that he was prosecuted for failing to comply with a condition on his cert he doesn't need to prove anything. The prosecution needs to prove their case, not him his innocence. J. huffhuff
Or you could get them put on a friends licence until you're back more permanently. This obviously relies on you; a) having a friend b) having a friend you trust c) having a friend you trust with space in their gun cabinet
kent
Regardless more than an odd person will put firearms into safe storage when away. Conditions actually stated are not relevant if the guns go, you are responsible for their safe keeping end of! They look to lay blame and don't be surprised if you need to defend your actions if something happens. For instance were does it say one must not leave a fully working firearm in your car and go in to the pub for a lunch? There are people who have lost their ticket for this and I know one guy who ended up in court to defend just that after his gun was stolen from a secret compartment in his van. Is it worth a fraction of that pay cheque to store your guns with an RFD?
HDAV
Car outside a pub is not the same as your occupied place of residence.... Besides if anything happens while you are away your wife should at least get a reasonable response out of the police.....

Removal of Forends etc and storage of these in a mates safe would be a start if it wasn't the RFD route
HDAV
Erm locked in cabinet to which only the cert holder has keys is the situation for most SGC holders who don't live alone......... I never suggested that the wife would have access ( regardless of where the cert holder is at the time) he will be working away for a year not absent from the property for a year.......
