I spent quite a few frustrating evenings trying to get my head around this and, there's nothing for it but, persistence.

I hold it with my forefinger and thumb completely sealing the sides. Larger hole at the bottom, lips sealing top n bottom.

Initially my problem was in trying to use the tip of my tongue or, placing my tongue too high on the caller. What works for me is to have my tongue higher than the caller and to curl the tip down and push forwards into the caller. What seems key is where your tongue is in relation to the bottom hole. You also need to blow air out from the bottom of your mouth, and through the bottom hole. Dunno if that will help... I watched a bunch of videos and read a pile of instructions... but, in the end, trial and error got me there.

The replies are about spot on....I brought a copy off ebay then made my own version which is a little softer in tone...

Practice is the key, however I have found switching to a softer caller (widgeon whistle) or your own hand squeak is better once they are with in 200 yards because the tenterfield is a bit harsh for the close calling.

Failing that…..Whack it when it sits and looks at you…
