1/2" CCD Camera

it depends on three things as to what distance you can see with Infrared,

firstly you must have a decent low lux camera that will see infrared this is a must, because if your camera is naff then you can throw as much IR light out of any torch and the camera just wont see it,

secondly you need a scope that the lenses are not coated in the coatings that stop infrared light getting through , you will find that the cheaper 3x9x56 scopes work well,

thirdly you will need a torch that will give out a decent light that is not too powerful so as to bleach everything out but is bright enough for you to see your quarry at different distances and also show eye shine to further distances,

now my setup ,, I have three different torches , not because I need them because I don't really, I just carry my big 66mm crelant to use as a spotter, I mainly use the 501b with an IR oslon black and I carry a modified uniquefire torch for close in shooting and also as a spare incase my battery fails me, now with my setup I can see eyeshine to 200yrds no problem but for shooting I would safely say 120 yrds for clear visibility, with the crelant 66mm I can increase the distance by about 40yrds which is more than ample for rimfire ranges

hope this helps mate

cheers Bob

ps ,,just ring moreton and mention my nightbuild and he,ll know exactly which camera you are after, don't forget to get it with a 12mm lens,,,, cheers EVO

Thanks Bob, just ordered a camera, they were very helpful. I already have a lens that I can use, but the person made sure that I had a 12mm lens so that it's up for the job, so he knew what I wanted it for! With that camera, a Hawke night-eye, and a xsearcher, do you reckon beyond 200 yards is possible?

Make sure the lens you use is ir corrected. I can't find any links to cameras but have asked a pal to email one over. It's about 70 quid though!

Let's be honest here, the ns200 uses an inferior camera and lens to the one you're about to buy and makes it out to 160 plus on x8 mag. You should be okay I would have thought.

Just go with evo's for now, the important thing is to build one, get the confidence up and then you will find you can't help tinkering!

My unit is undergoing a radical rework, I hope to be able to completely do away with the scope mounted screen and condense the whole thing to under 100mm, eyepiece included. Time will tell if it works, but it'll be fun trying.

If any of you are interested I have approximatley 6 old black and white cctv cameras I think with either 1/2" or 1/3rd ccds, dome type. I also have a box of old lenses about 10 in total of varying focal lengths, both fixed and variable. If you can get here you can have a rummage through them and take some home.
