Colc08
Hi Guys, Got a new wooden dog kennel and run at the end of last summer. It came tanalised but I want to give it a proper coat of protection by the end of the summer. What is the best stuff to use please? Cheers Col
bodach
I used old tractor oil mixed with parafin, it gets soaked in to the wood and stopped chewing. You need to weather the kennel after treating it till the smell goes. For the run no problem and its cheap. Bod

scotslad
I was waiting to see if anyone else answered this with any better suggestions I painted my fence with water based Duck's back treatment, it was usless, got the local shop to order me some proper Solvent based wood treatment (mines was Cuprinol stuff) far better and that is wot i would advise. U could go with cresote or cresoseal them seem to call the new stuff nowadays, but i'd be wary off anything if very smelly, u keep a dog for its keen nose if it seems smelly to u it will be overpowering to the dog and could harm it's nose (althou i painted ferret hutches with the old cresote for years never done ferrets any harm) When i was a boy we used to paint all the larch lap fences with pure waste oil, great stuf for preserving wood, but not a great idea to lean on it ever, would leave black marks on anything (possibly the parrafin stops that) also if waste oil/oil is now considered a carcigenic for mechanics ,would it be a good idea to paint ur keenel with it? No idea if dogs are affected the same way, just a thought
