Why does a cannon recoil / jump more the hotter the barrel gets?

Recommended Posts

Secondary, possibly more importantly, the temperature has a big bearing on the powder ignition and will ignite faster as the barrel warms up which will increase pressure and therefore recoil.

This is what I thought must be partly responsible, not so much a factor with modern powders as they're manufactured to perform across a wide temperature band but easy to imagine crude black powder early types being highly affected.

I wonder if "Snotty" could give a good answer on this subject, He was into Cannons from what i remember of him, Oh! and grass !!!

it could lead to me taking back some of the things i said about him after he got us kicked off Bisley Range.

Only some things mind :whistling:
