The Essex Hunter
I had decided not to shoot today as the forecast was very hot with a slight wind, but a lovely stiff West wind persuaded me otherwise… Back to the title, Bleeh asked in a post about shooting from a ditch and there have been few different reply’s… http://forums.pigeonwatch.co.uk/forums/topic/252743-setting-up-with-a-ditch-behind-you/ I use a bit of kit I made some time ago which works very well for me. It received various comments from a number of people who had never used it!! The birds have chewed off a narrow strip along the headland, so shooting from the ditch gave me the cover and space to decoys into as with a field hide I would have put most of them into the thicker crop. I had picked 19 when a mate called who had just dropped 18 rabbits off so he came along for a while. I gave him my left handed Browning and watched my cartridges disappear along with my flask of tea!! He added 6 more and left with 25! There was a distinct lull in the birds but I managed 12 more with 4 birds lost. Not a big bag but good fun considering I was not going out! ack-ack
I can vouch for them being very well engineered bits of kit, i use my one when i fish the dykes on the marshes, the banks are too steep to set up a conventional fishing chair. Lord Geordie
I used a Ditch to shoot from a few year back! I was shooting with a Friend up in Northumberland, We set up on the edge of a field using a Ditch for cover! We even had an over hanging bush for top cover! We placed our gunbags on the bank top to provide a gun rest between shots! The deeks went out and the fun started. It provides a good hide and on a hot day keeps you cool. Not to mention traveling light due to not needing loads of gear! Glad you had a good day Mate! I have a chair JUST like that I use for fishing the banks of Whittle Dene lakes
