Permissions and FAC

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, looking for a bit of advice about permissions and applying for a FAC.

So at the moment I have a SGC and I'm looking at trying to gain some permission local to where I live. I've been thinking though, to increase my chances of getting the said permission should I be offering not only to shoot pigeons, Corvids, etc but also rabbits, rats etc?

From my limited knowledge of pest control I reckon I'd need a rimfire for that kind of work. So, is it normal for people to get permissions and then apply for an FAC to carry out the work required?

Thanks in advance for any info you can provide.

You will find it a lot easier if you already have suitable permission to carry out pest control on land. It would be useful to find out what calibers the land has already been cleared for if at all.

You have to have good reason for having an FAC.

Good luck with it mate I know it can be a right pain to get but you just have to jump through the hoops and once you get it there are hours of great times to be had.

Being new to FAC, I assume rimfire, you would normally get a closed certificate to start with. This is land which the Chief Constable gives you permission to shoot over so you need to have written permission to use a particular calibre over specified land. My FLO gives automatic open certificate at first renewal i.e. five years, assuming no problems.

As has been said, you need good reason so, having secured written permission, make yourself familiar with the land. Backstops, footpaths, bridleways etc and usage of the land should all be taken in to account to decide which calibres you think would be suitable as well as the quarry. Your FLO can tell you what calibres the land is cleared for.

Do apply for everything you think you need and leave it to the FEO to decide. You may want .22lr for night time and .17hmr for daytime and, if there's a Pigeon problem then you may want an 8 shot semi-auto. Some parts of the permission may only be suitable for FAC air so put in for that too. Remember to apply for moderators for each rifle.

Good luck.

have you got permission yet for your shotgun?

if not, then when approaching farmers, you can say your happy to control pigeons, crows, rabbits, rats, all can be done with a shotgun (within reason)

that would get your foot in the door so to speak

then after a month or two, approach the farmer saying, your applying for your FAC, and if you get it, would it be ok to use on his land, lamping the rabbits/rats, if he say's yes

then put in for your FAC quoting his name/address as the area of permission

Ah okay. So currently I don't have any permission but thought that my chances would increase if I can offer the farmer/landowner more than just pigeon/crows etc. But if you reckon you can use a shotgun for rats aswell then that might open a few more doors.

Thanks for the replies guys, really appreciate the help.

Thanks for the info mate. This will probably be a stupid question but what are the reasons you would want a 22.lr for night time and .17hmr for the day?

You may want the .22lr set up for night vision and the .17HMR with a standard day scope and you wouldn't want to keep changing and re-zeroing scopes on one rifle. Generally speaking your ranges will be less at night and greater during the day. .22lr is quieter for night use too which will prevent noise nuisance.

That makes sense, thanks mate.

depend if you want to eat/keep the shot rabbits, I asked for 2 .22 rimfires, a bolt action for daytime and a semi auto set up for night use/night vision, I personally only shoot to 60yds, as I wouldn't want to walk further to pick up a rabbit, plus 17hmr are noisy in my book, one shot and scare everything off
