just wondering how you guys get your land to stalk on? i do have a small amount of land to stalk over but id like to gain a little more

(theres a point to this.. im off doorknocking in east/north yorks next week and i dont want to be flogging a dead horse or "shown the door" !!)

are you

a) in a syndicate

B a fc leaseholder

c) a gamekeeper or other farm/estate worker

d) farmer requested you thin the deer out.

e) you never asked you just got "shooting permission"

Be prepared to take a pocket full of money or maybe a sack full of notes if your just going un announced or as a stranger door knocking farms in the rare event there might be a scrap of land that many of your predecessors might have missed.

Most farmers I know are well aware of the value of stalking as they get bombarded with requests I wish you luck though fella and you don't get anything by not trying.

As to your question a/b/c/d etc I would have to be ( f ) as I am fortunate to own the land I stalk on.

to be honest bud, im more interested in HOW people have the land to stalk.. iv no issue with spending the pennies to get the stalking its the getting a foot in the door and carrying on in the right direction im wanting. rarther than paying a guided stalk. (im not saying thats a bad thing either, i just cant affrd £200 an outing!)

I Know its not easy to get your foot in the door pal, if I were you I would be looking at one of the more mainline stalking forums, theres a lad from Doncaster who like you was just starting out he ended up getting his dsc1 paid for with a site bursary and has been out with several members stalking foc

Loads, loads, loads and loads of door knocking, which resulted in loads, loads and loads of nos with a few yesses. Then,if these yesses had some of the nos on the marches, some of the nos see the good work getting done,or have problems with rabbits, foxes etc and these become yesses too,and they can build pretty quickly.Dont always look at it as stalking ground straight away, and maybe do donkey work on it first and hopefully more will come.Even if you get a no,but the folks seem decent and not anti, then ask if you can leave a number in case they change their mind.Probably the best roe ground I have I only got on 3 years after leaving my number with them and had written it off.

To get stalking land is not a dark art just buy some.

I've just bought 2 lease and have one already. It was not expencive and I hold the lease so it down to me who shoots on it. Over 3000 acres in the boarders have accomidation on one of the leases.

So it no holly grail just some cash.

When I offered some syndicate places on this site only the other week on 1100acres I'd been offered 6 members at £800. Now before anyone gets upset I was not making money out of the lease. But in the big picture a days stalking is £150, so weekend is £300 for four outings. So 3 weekends out and your membership it's paid for, any deer you shot you own. The big advantage is you can stalk all day and go when you like.

Syndicate stalking it a good way if you can not find land close by.

If you want any info or have a chat jut pm.

Like I say, I don't mind paying for it.. Nowts for free, it's the initial 'getting my foot in the door' without someone ripping me off or making the mistake I almost made earlier.. Buying on a whim.

Also, I did pm you about that syndicate.. :-)

Unfortunatly any syndicate is a gamble. Two of the three leases I've not seen and the other I went and walked it when it was offered. That was 9 years ago and although I saw a doe, it did not mean it had lots of deer on. So it's a good way to get on the ladder but the draw back is often when they are advertised places go quickly.

I remember looking for two new members on my lease in Eskdalemuire and put an ad on the SD site had over 100 pm the firt night and over the week 250 PMs it was mad. The up side is I mave a nice small syndicate on 1200 acres and the guys all know each other and all stalk together

So yes syndicates do have pros and cons.

Syndicates definately have their Pro's and Con's. We were shooting 250-280 deer pa amongst 4 members, if it was not for a syndicate, a one man band would have struggled to keep the numbes in check. So this is a Pro.

My only advice, when joining make sure everyone understands the rules of the game, and 'Ask' what happens when the lease is up for renewal.

In my case, people who i thought were freinds for the 3 years, renewed the lease, minus the common courtesy of asking whether i would have liked to join. Thats the Con.
