A productive mornings walk!

Being the first morning for a while when I have woken up and it wasn't raining I decided to go for a short walk on one of my permissions with my trusty little .22 Pumper. I got to the farm just after 07:15 (I know, not really early but not to worry) and after a quick chat with the farmer I set of in pursuit of a few rabbits. I wanted one rabbit to cook for a freind who is coming to see me tonight for a foxing session and a couple to use as "bait" in an area where I am trying to lure a couple of foxes into a safe shootable position - Shooting at them anywhere near their earth is a definite "No No" due to the proximity of houses about a quarter of a mile away.

Within 5 minutes I took my first 2 shots, both at a range of about 80(ish) yards. Two rabbits were sitting out near the mouth of a burrow, one adult and one younger one. I took the adult first, giving it about 2 inches of hold over (My .22LR is zeroed up for 50 - 60 yards) and it flipped over to a good head shot and then took the younger one which flipped over but managed to scrabble down the burrow and out of reach before I could get to it - The blood trail in the mouth of the hole confirmed a hard hit! The adult that I picked up turned out to be large a milky doe!

In the next field I spotted 3 adults sitting out but could not take a shot as they were almost skylined and they soon spotted be trying to get into a shootable position. A couple of minutes later I spotted a nice sized adult feeding who hadn't noticed me creeping up on it about 60 yards away. Resting the rifle on my thumb stick I squeezed off a shot and the rabbit flipped and kicked a few times and that was that. On picking it up I found that I had excatly what I wanted, a nice large buck rabbit that was going to make a tasty meal for my friend and me!

The forth and last shot of the morning came when I got back to the same field where I shot the first 2 rabbits and was a quite young one which was happily munching away which took a neck shot at about 40 yards - I meant to do a head shot but pulled it fractionally.

The buck is now oven ready and in the fridge ready to be cooked up in a honey and mustard sauce, new potatoes and garden peas while the two others are in the boot of the car ready to be chopped up and used as bait for tonights foxing session with my mate!

All in all a pleasant, productive and nice start to the day - Let's hope the day finishes just as happily!

The photo shows the three recovered rabbits with my little Browning .22 "Pumper" - Left to right is the young one, then the buck and then the milky doe.
