scotslad
U might struggle to get ex layers at this time of year. Still time to put poults down assuming u've got a pen to hold them, might get some cheap deals. Chances are the birds may be 8 week old now but some shoots like putting them down at that age
scolopax
You may be able to get late big poults, often cheap as most shoots do not want 8 week ++ birds. If time is a factor you can release in small pens, 10 x10 like partridges. Just let out ten a day until all out, feeders in and out of the pen. But you really need to be on top of foxes
doo hunter
Hi thanks for the replies , yeah may have to get poults after all my only worry is I spoke to the guy who has the shooting on the farm next door and he said he has shot 19 foxes on his side this year so god knows how many is going about my shoot! scotslad
Depending on the size of place 19 isn't a massive number, his ground may be far more appealing than yours? U'll never know till u get out for a look about My mates shoot always put there birds out around the 20th off aug, and we used to put out about that time too, the latest was about the 18th of sept, no idea wot happened as i wasn't running it then but didn't make much difference to the season, as long as ur not in a hurry to shoot it doesn't really matter. The shortening daylight hours definately gives them less time to wander. If u have an existing pen on the shoot tart it up and make it fox proof, but birds are not long in starting to roost esp if plenty of low branches, once there up roosting its not the disaster that it could be.. The game farmer we deal with put his first advert in the paper in about 30 years due to the exceptional rearing season nd having too many birds, back pages of shooting times full of birds 'priced to sell'
doo hunter
Hi yeah going to the shoot this weekend to do some work on the pen which was left by the previous syndicate ,by the looks of it its big enough for 50+ birds so that should do for this year. Got a number from a guy in a nearby shoot his mate has a game farm with a few poults left so should get some sorted out hopefully, As for the foxes spoke to the farmer and he says the last few mornings he has seen a fox moving between a couple of plantations so a busy weekend for me .
