henry d
I was using the above to listen to some music before deciding to transfer to iTunes and sync to my ipod, however when trying to transfer it would not do it and now I find that although iTunes and Windows media player recognise the disc and its contents and I hear the disc turning there is no sound although the disc drive seems to run then slow then run again. Both Itunes and Windows will play from my music folder though. I cannot find any faults, but I`m no expert and the laptop is an acer aspire 5742 running windows 7. Last time I went to a local shop to get my netbook sorted it cost £70 so, would it just be better to get an external drive? If so what type (Amazon has 000`s) to play discs as well as burn discs and will this also work if I need to add software via disc? Cheers guys, as you can see I`m nowhere near a geek with these things so easy to understand language would be a bonus in any replies
aris
If you end up going the external route - I bought a cd/dvd/blu-ray external drive from ebay for about 25 quid - works fine, though it does require two of the PC's USB ports to function (one for data, one for extra power). I only use it to rip stuff to disk, so it is not permanently connected.
Marc Z
Hardware generally doesn't just stop working, it's more likely to be a software issue. First thing I'd try is downloading VLC media player online for free. Try playing a CD through that to see if it's just your current media players being weird. If not, go into your hardware listing and try rolling back the driver for the disk drive, or updating the driver if an update is available. There might possibly be a separate volume control for the disk drive that has been muted.
GingerCat
If the disc is seen and read by the drive but there is no sound then its a software fault. I suspect that somewhere a mute button is ticked. If the drive couldn't see the disc I would recommend cleaning it with an air duster or alcohol wipe. henry d
VLC downloaded and still the same result, no driver updates required and all systems running correctly nothing on mute and files from My Music file are playing as normal Edited September 9, 2013 by henry d
secretagentmole
Try running a CD cleaning disk? Only requires a tiny bit of dirt in the wrong place and no data! Edited September 9, 2013 by secretagentmole
aris
If you go into the explorer under 'Computer' - it will list the devices it sees. Does it see the CD/DVD drive? If you right-click on it and choose 'properties' - what do you see - both with and without a disc in there. Try with both a data disk (some software - like your windows CD) and a music CD. henry d
Went to work and tried the above and it ran automatically, brought it home and tried it again and it runs and I get a brief snatch of music, well just noise, and the run time of the disc shows the same then I get a few bits of noise and it shows a second or two more even though it has been running 20-30 seconds. I`m pretty sure there is a problem with the drive in some way or other
GingerCat
Clean the drive, if a laptop the diod is normally visible, use an alcohol wipe, carefully to wipe it. If not visible use an air duster. Its dirty.

GingerCat
Intermittent fault may be a loose cable inside, check these or swallow it and get someone to lift the case and do it for u. Failing that buy a new one and sell this on eBay.
ME
Blow in the DVD/CD slot and blow the surface of the DVD/CD. Wipe the DVD/CD on your top removing any dust. Turn off the computer and turn it back on again. If you try again and that DVD/CD doesn't work then try every one you own in case it is the disc. Try plugging the computer in on a different ring - like upstairs. Try holding the computer above your head next to a window - like you are trying to get a signal. Let me know how that goes
ME
Alternatively PM one of the mods, get your user name changed to "TamaraSharon" or "Purplechick" and change your avatar to a distant picture of a half tidy female. You will get a queue of male fawning PW computer experts sending you PMs offering to come round for dinner to sort out your "mother board". Tried that a year ago and have a restraining order now, so cannot comply unless you wanna do it for me?
