rascal72
Gutted is an understatement ! Called on a permission to see if there was any duck flighting only to find 50-60 canadas feeding in the bottom field so we decided to wait for them to lift, watching duck flighting up and down the river. As the light started to fade more geese flighted in. First shots went to the mate 50yds from me 200yds from the feeding geese that then began to lift, 1st lot turned away from us, 2nd lot 2 shots and missed then 2 turn our way 2 more shots amd down goes the back goose but some 40-50yds up the river, off goes the dog down the steepest overgrown bank and into the river but try as he did he just couldnt swim against the current to find the downed bird and with light fading fast I was concerned for the dog as it turned out with good reason and glad ide been working on the recall as it was some 150yds down river before the dog could get out of the river and he seemed to be as gutted as me but I had to think about the safety of the dog and bring him back gutted we couldnt pick the downed bird (stone dead) and as gutted for the dog as he worked his socks off and really tried his heart out and if there had been anymore water in the river he wouldnt have been going in full stop gutted :(

mpk
Important part of Wildfowling is to make a decent judgement call, way to easy to loose yourself or the dog for the sake of a bird !!! You did the right thing !

silver pigeon 3
Done the right thing mate, had to do it myself a week ago. Never a good feeling losing hard earned birds - but hell of a lot worse losing your dog!
rascal72
He's doing me proud only had him 4 months from a rescue centre and he's really coming on well just glad he"s got the recall he's so enthusiastic and at times an ignorant head strong clown but at the end of the day he's only 15 months old and still a pup really and he's impressed me in the short time we've had together I wouldnt dream of putting him at risk for any bird

figgy
All part of fowling. Makes the ones you do get to hand all the more special. Lost one on my first flight of the season. Figgy
