was out today on my own for a couple hours and when the pigeons were coming into the pattern and coming down into it low i kept hitting them in the back end and not killing cleanly or i would miss the easy shot and hit them going away with the second once i had to speed my swing up to catch them on the higher further out shots i had a fair few where i just took feathers out of them and they kept going i think i must be poking at them and not swinging through keeping the gun going then i started over thinking things any tips to get me back in the groove and swinging through again would be gratefully recieved.

Hi, sounds like you got some trouble there mate. Firstly I think you need to check your eye dominance. This can cause a lot of problems in missing moving targets. Do you shoot with both eyes open? If you have an eye dominance problem we can come back to that.

Assuming all is ok with eye dominance then it sounds like you are not giving your target enough lead and worse stopping your barrels as you pull the trigger. If this is the case then I would suggest go out and do some dry runs. By this I mean pick up on an imaginary target, swing your barrels and pull the trigger and fire a shot.

Practice this a good few times with live ammunition to get the feel of it. When you have practiced this a few times go out again and when you line up on a pigeon either right to left or left to right. Line up on the target, match its speed and push on through keeping the barrels moving and pull the trigger, remember DO NOT STOP moving the barrels. Remember a shotgun is a fairly slow weapon, you have to shot your target where it is going to be not where it is or by the time the shot gets there the bird has already moved on out of that space.

Its always a good idea to check the shot pattern at what ever distance you what to shoot the target and again depending on shot size and chokes used all play a part in it.

hi thanks for the reply i shoot with both eyes open and eye dominence is not the problem will dry a few dry runs as i am off on holiday this week just strange as a few weeks ago i was shooting well like i had 11 pigeons for 16 shots and then the last few times i have been out been missing an awful lot i am pretty sure i am stopping my swing when i pull the trigger its very annoying as was just beginning to shoot reasonably well and it all fell apart

Easy mate, providing the gun Fits you, and shoots where you LOOK.

LOOK at the Space in front of your target, forget about the gun and swing, stare intently at that SPACE and maintain the space in front.

You do it without a gun, just follow the space in front of the birds flying as you walk about and ONLY look there (SPACE). it will become second nature when your out, forget about the gun, and ONLY look in front, you will forget about swing all together. Try it...

thanks for the replies i will get on the clays next weekend and in the mean time will try and watch the space in front of the birds it does seem like i am looking at the end of my barrel when i have been swinging and thats maybe what made it feel wrong something has just been feeling wrong recently hopefully that will be it

was a bit better when out for a few hours today started off pretty poor but then tried to like not mount the gun so early so i didnt have time to over think what i was doing and doing this i managed to get 4 out of the next 6 shots and one of those i hit twice but by the time i had done this we ran out of birds on the flightline so packed up but things started to look a bit better at the end so hopefully will soon manage to shoot myself out of what i think is some sort of mental block

Personally I stare at the head on any live quarry shooting, that way the TARGET is in your PURSUIT vision as it were and the barrel is in your PERIPHERAL vision. not the other way around!. If you're really struggling try J Bidwells MMS method, once you get the hang of it you won't believe how much time you gain on the target. :good:

Hope this proves to be of some help,

Regards remmyman
