Evening all, we have had Fern a few weeks now and her crate training has been going ok, she has been doing her business outside when we let her out and tell her how good she is for doing so, we have given her a little more freedom around the house a couple of minuets here and there, but every time my back is turned she has a wee or poo in the house! any help would be much appreciated as im fed up at getting shouted at from the mrs!

thanks in advance

Adam

i tend to let them straight out of the crate outside to empty themselves and then bring them in (when empty) to enjoy their time around the family.ive never had any problems doing this but not every dog/owner is the same and all use their own techniques, but this way works best for me

She is going outside fine, but it seems as if she wants to squeeze another one out when she is inside, we spend about 30 minuits at a time outside,

i would take her straight back outside sternley telling her no and leave her there a minute or two then punnish by a way of placing back in her crate to see if things change

The easy answer - and easier-said-than-done answer, especially having with a She Who Must Be Obeyed "onsite" - is: Don't turn your back on the pup. A pup should have free range indoors only when your eyes are riveted to it - and your hands not far behind, for lifting and taking the pup outside at the first hint of accident waiting to happen.

Sorry, them's the facts. Otherwise, it's a trial and error thing with the pup, and the "errors" are on you, not the pup.

Good luck,

MG

Try putting a piece of newspaper under the pup if it's trying to relieve itself and leave the mess on the paper for a while so the pup thinks that is the place to go. Once the pup is using the paper, gradually move it towards the door a little bit each day until it's a the door. Give it a day or two then place the paper outside the back door and leave the door open as much as you can. When the pup goes to the back door it will find the paper outside, do it's business and realise that is where to go. Good luck

Personally i would never use the crate as a punishment on a pup the idea is it is their safe place and last thing you want is for them not to like going in it, from all the crate training stuff i have read up they say using it as a punishment is the biggest no no. When the dogs get a bit older then i find its not a problem if they do something wrong as when you tell them off they seem to go into their crate anyway.

My collie didnt seem to take too long but my springer seemed to take ages but got there in the end. What i did with both of them was when they were outside and did their business i would be giving a command word (mine was "busy") and then when they finished would fuss them and say "good busy" or something similar so they know they have done good. If they went inside i would sternly say NO gently hold them by the scruff and take them to the back door and take them outside and when outside give the command word and if they went give them a big fuss. I found this worked well and also has the massive advantage you can get the dog to go virtually on command so ideal before a long car journey etc.

Patience is they key as I said my springer seem to take ages a good 3-4 weeks to be totally trained whereas my collie was done in just over a week. (collie was my first dog)

As others have said going out regularly and after meals helps a lot.

I don't use a create in the home, I expect a dog to behave in the home without being put in a box. If they get in the way I will just make them stay on the mat as adults or put them back in the kennel etc. I think your issue might well be the create, the dog don't wish to soil there but as yet hasn't the control to hold it (physical thing not mental). Watch a puppy, pick it up and put it outside as it leans forward or squats in the home (no chastisement). Feed it put it outside, first thing put it outside, coming in put it outside, drink put it outside. Basically predict the issue.

Pads and newspaper are crazy unless you live in a block of flats, I don't believe in potties for kids either (straight from nappies to loo for my two when they were little) why confuse the issue? Dogs should not go in the house K.I.S.S

Soon they will learn to go on command if you always use the same words, many use "look sharp" I have no reason that to use "wee, wee" or "poo, poos" just like I did with the kids and its useful later on when your going to have the dog in a pit or hide for a few hours. I can deal with the sounds / words which are what the dog reacts to and they will do it for mere verbal praise even if they are not in dire need.

That said I think dogs belong in a kennel outdoors but still do house training as the dog will still come indoors on occasions for various reasons. Having a non house trained adult kennel dog aint funny if you have to take it into buildings on occasion, done that one and wont do it again
