chrisjpainter
This is so confusing for a newbie. Initially I was told 3-9x40 scope would be best, then a 3-9x50 and now neither Presume it's a personal thing yup! There's not a great deal of difference between X40 and x50. As Kent says, it's not so much about the amount of light, but useable light. obviously, a wider scope will have more light passing into it, but that's only of any benefit if the image is CLEARER not just brighter. And that is down to the quality of the glass. the only real value might be if you do a lot of shooting in low light conditions when a brighter image might give you a bit more visibility. In your case? a new sport HD would be a good start. I've had a couple in the past and those are great prices. personal preference of magnification is crucial. my magnification stays on 8 for bunny and pigeon bashing. it will go up to 12, but 8 is where I feel comfortable, balancing out field of vision and size of image. a 3-9 gives you the option of changing to where you're most comfortable and then leaving it there. evo
if you want a top torch for air rifle or rimfire then pm dave G on here and get one of his 501b,s with a red led, cracking lightweight torch and they work superb also regarding lumens you must remember the brighter it is the more chance you have of spooking your quarry, just go for a red one and you wont look back atb Evo
