Rav4 took out battery and car died!

Hmmm..

Took the battery out of my 2.0 petrol M reg rav4 - charged it up on a trickle charger.

Replaced battery tried to start it and...

hazards flash maybe 10 times lights, horn etc work but NOTHING from the starter - not even a click.

Haynes tells me not to remove battery (hindsight is allways 20/20) as the EMU will lose it's memory.

Well it looks like it has - how do I re-boot it - if I buy a new one will that need re-booting (of that is the right term).

Any help (or random amusing abuse) welcome.

Steve

PS my defender had no such problems, bloody electrics!

Easy thing to do is to tap the starter case with a hammer or other blunt object. This will loosen the armature inside if the bearings are giving out, and will also free up the plunger inside the solenoid. After a few taps, try the car again. If the starter engages and the car starts up, then you will need a new starter.

For the alternator, the easiest way to see if that is working is to take a volt meter to the battery terminals with the engine running to see what it is putting out. Should be something around 14 volts. If it is putting out way under or way over than that (i.e. 12.8 or 15.5), then it is bad and will need to be replaced.

If both of those check out, then, considering you have a brand new battery which should be good, you might either have a bad positive battery cable that could be corroded internally, or you could have an intermittent short in your ignition switch, or the wiring from the switch to the solenoid could be faulty.

The other thing that can happen on occasion is an interruption in the starting circuit because of the alarm system built into the vehicle. Try turning off all electrical accessories and then with the driver door closed turn the ignition key on for between about 7 to 10 minutes. Don't attempt to start the car. Just turn the key to the on position. At the end of the designated time, turn the switch off, open and close the driver's door and then attempt to start the engine. I have had starting problems with other vehicles and have found that by doing this it resets the alarm system and the vehicle will start.

Check the connections to the starter they may have come loose maybe even from pulling on the cables when changing the battery. Long shot but who knows maybe. Also try push starting it, get it rolling to about 10-15 mph put it in gear and pop the clutch, if it starts you have a starter problem.

Just turn the key 3 quarters and let the computer 'reboot' for about 20 minutes, thats an ecu reset for Toyota the drive the car for 15 minutes on the highway and 10 minutes around town so the engine learns not to shut off when it's idle.

Resetting the ECU usually just requires pulling the battery and touching the terminals together for like 10-15sec.

The terminals from the car, not the battery terminals themselves, in case that needed clarification.

Also I suspect your IACV is clogged quite badly. Assume IACV goes from 0 (fully closed) through 10 (fully open). Suppose the default value is 5. Unfortunately, because your IACV is so clogged, that with a value of 5 (which would be after a computer reset) the opening is still small and not enough to provide the necessary idle air. After running the car for a while, it learns to open the IACV completely to its max position and it is now no longer stalling.

If none of the above then I suggest taking it to a garage or call for a road assistance wich ever suits you.

Update.

Thanks for the help, neighbours thought I was mad - did everything short of dancing around it.

A RAV4 website had a complicated set of turn key twice, open door three times wait and and...

wonder if someone made it all up for a laugh! :yahoo:

Still no joy so played (again) with alarm fob and don't know what I did in what order but it pinged, and now everything is good!

So ready to go.

Thanks again :good:
