A little while ago I ordered 2 cree wf-501b torches

One red from china

One white which came from Newcastle

Both are bought from fleebay

Now the red one from China seems a lot better quality than the one from Newcastle.

In fact took a little while to get the white one working.

Is this just a case of been unlucky or is it a difference in manufacturing

No, there are genuine 501b's and then there are untold numbers of cheapo knock offs. The genuine ones have heavy bodies, deep knurling and decent quality threads and a darker, more glossy black body. The knock offs are lighter, have knurling that is no more than a scratch on the surface really, crappy threads and matte black finish.

The main issue is if you have two of them, the head and tail parts are not interchangeable.

I have had some of the rip-offs, and some of the electrical components fall off or fail almost immediately,

There is nothing to go wrong with the mechanical parts for what they cost so if you are upgrading them they make for an inexpensive host body.

I thought one might be a fake, I noticed the one from Newcastle has silver thread that did feel cheap where the other was black and felt a lot better. The one from china feels so much better.

Dave, I have already ordered the new lens and reflector so that's probably what I wil do.
