eredel
I've just aquired a nice 1983 example of the above semi-auto and would like to know if the barrel is steel shot proofed....I think it's chromed. In all the years I've been shooting I've never owned or shot a semi-auto.....should be an interesting learning curve! Eric.
GOLDCREST
I personally would never shoot steel shot through any of my guns..even the steel shot proof ones....This is on the advice of my Gunsmith friend, he says it will wreck the barrels...He's a damn good Gunsmith so I'm taking notice of his advice....Your choice. The Beretta 302 is a very fine Semi Auto by the way...Think you'll like it.
Gunnerbob
I was lucky enough to have a brand new 302 in the 80's, brilliant gun, if I remember correctly it never ever jammed or mis-fed during my ownership...
mudpatten
Unless a recent owner has had the gun specifically reproofed for steel, in which case it will bear the fleur de lyse steel proof stamp then it won`t be steel proofed. The need to use non toxic shot in European guns did not exist when that gun was built. Goldcrests comments about the use of steel shot through steel shot proofed guns are a bit pessimistic. Thousands upon thousands of people use steel shot every day with out any damage to their guns whatsoever, and have done so for years. Although the use of steel shot in particular is only a relatively recent thing in the U.K, when your gun was made it was mandatory for certain forms of shooting in the U.S, the main market for which your gun was designed and,as such, tens of thousands of Beretta 302`s where used by American sportsmen with steel, with no ill effects whatsoever. Many of them are still in use now where their main shortcoming is that most only had a 70mm chamber, rather than the 76mm which was a non standard special order. There are no proof laws as such in the U.S,one of the main reasons why your gun is massively over engineered and is quite capable of firing appropriate length steel shot cartridges. Is your gun fixed or multi choke? This will have a bearing on the recommended pellet size of steel shot should you elect to use it.
eredel
Thanks for the feedback gentlemen, much appreciated! The gun is a multichoke and came with 1/4 & 1/2 chokes, I'll probably never use steel but it's useful to know if the capability is there. Eric.
