Mmmm good idea Tom only prob is layout to buy one there serious old money aint they?

Not too bad really I have seen ones with mot for under £1000 a bit ruff round the edges but still perfectly useable. Only main issue is if your doing a lot of miles mpg is **** 15-17 that is both petrol and diesel.

Have you looked at the price of quads and running them?

They're expensive to buy and run (parts tyres ect), certainly not a huge saving over an older 4x4 and the you have to factor in the lack of comfort, awful road manners, lack of weather protection (for you and your equipment) and lack load carrying.

I looked into them last year but once I saw the big picture a cheap 4x4 made much more sense and now having had the use of a farm quad over the summer I'm so glad I didn't get one.

I'm like you in that I don't do many miles so fuel cost isn't a factor, I ended up with a hilux surf costing 1k, £150 to insure and £200 to tax.... I've now had it a year and it's been awesome.. So glad I didn't get a quad.

Don't get carried away with the cool idea of a quad.

I changed my big 4x4 and got a little suzuki vitara 3 door thinking that I would save money the road tax was the same the insurance was the same the fuel consumption was not that much better and it was not so much fun to drive after a few months I sold it and went back to a big truck I think if you can afford to buy a new/ish small 4x4 then they may be cheaper to run but older ones no.

Just an idea could you not get a small diesel car newer ones are dirt cheap to tax and insure and just use it to get to your shooting field and park up by the gate I am shore that it would not hurt you to carry your stuff for a a few hundred yards.

Dare I say this but could your wife not give up her car and use the bus to get to her studies after all you will be the bread winner or you could buy her a nice push bike with a big basket on the front to put her things in. :whistling:

Mines pre 2001 so fits the old system.

If you wanted something newer there's plenty of smaller 4x4's that tax cheaply.

I prefer older vehicles as there's less to go wrong, generally built better, I can work on them myself and are cheap to buy. I use my 4x4s as they were intended so they get some real abuse. I have no want to be precious about paint work or the like.
