If you understand the title you might be able to give your thoughts...

96n gen 3 surf in question 3.0.

Around 3 weeks ago whilst driving to work the t belt and battery light came on but I put this down to it not been reset last year when I had the t belt done..

Later in the day while driving home I lost all power to dash lights rev counter (all electrics basically) (even though the t belt and battery light did not come back up after my day at work)

Found it had blown the 100amp alt fuse when I got home, bought 2 off the bay and changed one.

After a couple of days it has done it again.

Has anyone had these symptoms ???

If so your views .... :)

When some more fuses arrive I will start at checking the alt output, glow plug relay, plug ohms, bad earths, etc,

Just wanted to no if anyone has had the exact same symptoms and what the cure was.

Just to Save me wasting time going up dead ends.

Thx in advance.....

Check the wiring harness to the alternator

Sounds like a short somewhere, follow the wire from that fuse and see where it goes

If there is no current passing through the fuse with the engine not running then make up a test bulb to bridge the fuse with luck it'll not be lit, then shake / move the harness about, if it's shorting somewhere unseen the bulb will light

Don't replace blown fuse after fuse, you could end up with a big fire, don't increase the fuse rating either

Hope this helps fella

Already checked wiring Paul , the obvious anyway I hope it's the relay but my theory is replace fuse start leave a few seconds remove the glow relay, and see if it blows , I'm going to try and check this the alt output without replacing too many fuses :)...

I'm just feeling it's the relay as it seems to blow within 2/3 mins of starting which makes me think the obvious which is the glow plugs sticking on, the reason it doesn't blow the glow plug fuse is that there doing nothing wrong, it's the relay that is putting the lump of power back into the battery through the alt fuse....

Don't have my PC to hand to look at a wiring diagram but would imagine if the fuse is labeled for alternator then it's protecting the alternator and wiring circuit for the alternator from the battery in the event of a short, there may be other systems which are tagged onto that circuit as well, one thing I'd be sure of is that to blow a 100 amp fuse you have a bit more than a dodgy glow plug, also if the glow plug fuse was pulling through this fuse first and is a lower amp that would blow first, no doubt about that.

Try my bulb idea, is what I use for shorts
