DIY Laser designator

I sometimes look at gadgets and think that "I would love one of those". Laser designators hold that fascination for me but they are so ridiculously expensive.

I've already got one of those hugely powerful green lasers that you can see in daylight and I thought that there must be a way of making the beam diverge so I experimented with different lenses from old spectacles and found that the prescription for 'long-sighted' works well and will diverge the beam in varying amounts depending on the strength and number of 'layers' you use.

I made a cap for the laser out of a plastic top that I found, drilled an aperture, using a dremmel I cut the spectacle lenses to fit inside the cap (I found by experiment that three gave a good spread).

Obviously its not as good as the real article but you can push the cap on and get a reasonable approximation and when you don't want it pull the cap off and iits back to the dot.

lets be honest any safety advice is better than none because not everyone reading this thread realises the danger involved with any bright light or laser, infrared is just as bad

as the light LOOKS very dim but infact is a very powerful beam and can cause serious damage to the eyes if looked directly at

Infrered is VERY bad, as you can't see the beam to move away.

Red, green blue & violet you can see & look away.

If the beam is collimated (focused to a spot) & close up you NEVER going to see again with any colour. Less then 1mw is classed as safe.

don't point that up towards the sky,, you,ll cut a plane in half

I use a 200mw laser when I,m gigging, and that will shine across the river Mersey which is 2 1/2 miles wide so why are you using such a powerful laser 2000mw ???, mine is only a tenth of that power and cost me £500 , what did you pay for it from Iran

my laser comes with very strict rules of usage and must be set above head height and under NO circumstances be looked at with the naked eye ( directly looked at)

surely a laser running at that power would need to be licenced ??? . or is it you prefer to shoot already cooked bunnies

its what it can do what I have paid for, over 1000 programmes it can even draw a creature on a wall and it runs round the room, worth every penny

the laser itself is prob only £100 but its the programme facility built in that costs,,,well hope it is lol
