Morning flight

Well, what an adventure!

Got to the marsh and got set up in real good time this morning. Time for a quick coffe and onto the foreshore we went, we were well exited as we had been a few weeks prior and there had been stacks of widgeon, and with the weather conditions we thought it was gonna be amazing!

Sat on the foreshore for about an hour and saw 1 party of about 10 widgeon fly past at about 70yards.

After that it all went very quiet, until I heard the bang of my mate bagging his first of the morning, this got a few birds up and moving but not many,

My mate then had a single widgeon decoy perfectly and dropped it with a single shot right into the pattern and the dog picked it up no problem.

It was now getting to the stage where we should have been thinking about packing up to get off the marsh as we knew it was gonna flood, but I held out for a little longer as I hadn't fired a shot yet, then fast left to right a teal flew past which I dropped with a quick snap shot:-)

Right.........now the fun starts, we race to pack up and start walking off and realise we are cut off!

We are gonna have to wait it out!

So we find the highest bit of ground we could and waited for an hour and 50mins:-( in gale force winds, heavy rain and the water up to out thighs!

In the meantime we notice blue flashing lights coming down the cycle trail behind us.........yep, someone had called the coastguard:-) he sat and watched for about 15minutes before getting on the megaphone and asking us to signal if we were ok or needed any help! We signaled that we were fine, as the tide wasn't gonna come any higher and away he went after watching for a further 10 mins!....(nice to know someone was watching out tho)

Once the tide had dropped we managed to get off the marsh and walk the mile back to the car with three half drowned dogs who were exhausted!

So all that for 2 widgeon and 1 teal:-)

But I'd get up and do it all again tomorrow:-)

That's fowling for ya!

I take it all the duck had moved inland due to the heavy rain!

Cheers for reading, hope it amused some of ya!

No duck is worth a ducking said my Grandfather...

I totally agree! We knew the marsh would cover but the chap I go with has been shooting there since he was a young lad. So knew the cover wouldn't be dangerously deep!

Just the wind and rain made it a miserable experience.

were your dogs left swimming for an hour and a half?

No!

The little ones curled up on my decoy bag that was hanging on my rucksack, which got rather heavy after that time and the older one swam around us, stood with her front paws up on us and swam back to land( which was only about 50metres behind us but with a deep gulley between us and it)

She is mad and loves it!

(Edit for spelling)
