AJL
Hi All A newcomer to the site and the sport and trying to get to grips with the multitude of things to learn. I have two questions I shoot clays but have been offered a days rough shooting next week. Should i use the same cartridges as the clays (28gram 8s) or try something else? Also, I am looking for a gun for my little un and was thinking of a .410 then someone said go for 28. Then someone else said go for a 20 with a light cartridge??. Any advice from those who have been there and done it ? Hopefully I'll get out this weekend, I certainly need the practice! Thanks Alastair
ProteuS
Hello AJL, Welcome to the forums! with regard to your rough shooting, you really need bigger shot, unless you expect to only be shooting at close range. 5's or 6's would be my preference , in something like a 30 or 32 gram load. for a gun for your kid to use, i'd say the biggest he can get away with using with comfort is what you want to go for. However, there's no point using a 20 with light cartridges if the guns just too heavy to hold and move for any length of time hope this helps
Cranfield
Definitely 5's or 6's for general rough shooting, although 7's from a hide work quite well. The right gun for your son depends a lot on his age and build. I know an 11 year old that shoots a cut down 12 bore, but he is a stocky lad and tall for his age. If you have a decent Clay Ground/Shooting School near you, see what they have available to hire for the "young gun". Most will have a 20 bore, some will have a .410 as well. stevethevanman
a 28 bore in my books gives same recoil firing a cartridge of the same wieght as a 20 bore I was reading this magazine in which there was a article about gun recoil if you took 4 guns all firing 20g of shot:410, 28, 20, 12, the 12 bore would be the one with the least recoil (dont shout at me if I am wrong, just what it said) comming in 2nd with the least recoil is the 20 bore, coming in 3rd is the 28 bore, commingin 4th is the 410. This theory is all to do with how restricted the barrel is, to exaggerate this diffrence, let us take a 410 and a 12 bore, they both fire the same amount of shot, the 410 is firing the same amount but because the gas is in a smaller barrel it creates a higher pressure and a larger backwards kick, "what goes out maust come back", the laws of physics. With the 12 bore it is firing the same amount of lead (20g) but the isnot as much restriction for the gas to expand this time so there is less pressure, so there is less back kick. This is what the magazine said NOT ME, correct me if I am wrong but I did not just think this up.
