ace_of_hearts
I am doing a project for college and have decided to do it on comparing the three above types of rifle for pest control. The project is pretty broad so most information is useful. I know a bit already, but am struggling with some good sources i can use and reference (the current task is to do a literature review). Does anyone know of any hidden gems of information that would be useful to me, be it a website that goes into detail about trojectories and energy or maybe some good books that are worth me reading? Also is there much in the range of free software for calculating bullet / pellet drop? Thanks, Lewis
fenboy
Have a look at chairgun for pellet drop info
Kes
There are many ballistic calc sites - each ammo manufacturer tends to have them and there are some very detailed ones calculated by hardened target shooters. If I find any useful lit sources, I'll PM them to you.
dadioles
Google is your friend...... Lots of relevant information out there. Defining "pest" is not a bad start. Rat, Pigeon, Rabbit, Fox. That is probably enough as they all have significant differences in size and body weight. Think about the energy and accuracy of a bullet or pellet and how that relates to distance and humane killing power. Also consider safety and location. An air rifle against pigeons in a barn is less likely to blow holes in the roof than .22lr
Dekers
Talk to a pest controller as well!
joe soapy
As above, define pest. Also need to consider cost/ effectivenes/ safety. Looking back over the last 12 months using the HMR, I think i've only actually needed it's range for a very few shots at bunnies. A 22 would have surficed in 80% of shots, but down range safety is not so good, consider a 40 grain bullet against the retained energy of a 17 once its past 200 yds... It's interesting to read the americans on the HM2, costs close to 22, effectivenes close to HMR. The ammunition costs of whichever caliber hardly ever come close to the costs of man and vehicle
