James_w12345
Hi guys, I do quite a bit of shotgunning and airgunning for small game and vermin, but want to get into Deer stalking. I have been out stalking Roe with a friend in the Scottish borders which was great fun (even though I never managed to bag a deer), but it was purely invitational as he culled for a local estate. I want to get into stalking but currently cannot get a firearms cert where I live (rental, no guncabinet) so was wondering how I could get into deer stalking without owning a rifle. Most deer stalking seems to be paid for, but bring your own rifle, and then you have to buy the venison too, which seems quite expensive, What is the best way of getting into deer stalking without a rifle and on a budget? jason kaye
Most outfitters(if not all) will let you use an estate rifle, so no need for your own and you don't HAVE to buy the venison unless it's badly shot and is unsalable to the game dealer, so you can book as many days as you like shoot any thing from Muntjac to Sika stags without owning a rifle or having a FAC. mr_magicfingers
I've just been out this week on my first stalk with Farrington Deer Services. I did a write up over on the stalking directory if you'd like to read what we did. Can't recommend Ian highly enough and I used his rifles as I currently have FAC in process. http://www.thestalkingdirectory.co.uk/showthread.php/80042-First-time-out-stalking?p=734560#post734560

Elk hunter
Not all charge for the venison. If I take a client out, they can use the estate rifle and if they shoot a roe they can have it at no cost. Plus I stalk all through the day not just mornings and evenings. Most deer are shot between 11 and 2pm. Andrew

James_w12345
I guess the difficulty is actually finding nearby stalking, then finding the one with their own rifle to use at no extra cost with ideally free venison at the end.... I am afraid you ain't going to find many who will provide that kind of stalk without paying a fair bit. Where are you located?

CharlieT
James Most, if not all reputable stalking providers will have a rifle for their clients to use and I'm sure they will also be able to supply a small quantity of venison for you to take home.
