Big Mat
With my second season over and done with, and a good season it has been, a little summary. September started with me getting up at the usual early hours to head down to sheps, this time i was taking a new member out, rather than being the new member. clakk joined me in the car park and we set off to my chosen spot. A few mallard flew past but nothing in range. In September, fenboy also joined me for his first flight, again duck flighting but everything too high. I had a few shots in september but failed to connect. October the 13th saw me joining lister1 for a flight on kirton, a marsh i had not shot before. harrythecat also joined us for the morning and we set off down to shoot on some splashes, a few duck came past the decoys but eventually one bunch came into the decoys and i bagged myself a nice hen mallard, my first duck. The next week i joined lister1 again down kirton, with ayano3 and another fowler for a flight on the splashes and i bagged myself a hen shoveler. October also saw me going for a day ticket on another marsh, a marsh that is very close to my house but i have never shot before. shakin stevens took me down for flight and DerbyshireDale was also there. we saw plenty of duck and geese and i will be joining that club next season. November the 1st saw me joining motty for a day ticket, although nothing was shot it was a very good flight watching the geese and perhaps if we had both been on the ball we'd have got a shot! November the 4th came along and a day on the washes at Earith was booked, oxfordfowler offered to show us the place and myself,ayano3,fenlander and another fowler took him up on the offer. My first time shooting the washes so sat in a hide was alot different to my usual wildfowling. Whilst sat in the hide with fenlander, a greylag came flying towards us and fenlander kindly let me have it, first shot failed to connect and the gun then jammed, managing to unjam the gun i then proceeded to fall over, but still managing to get off the second shot and the goose folded, stone dead. Another couple of trips where made to Earith that month, putting 1 wigeon in the bag. I had a couple of shots at pinks on the foreshore in november but with no luck December was a fairly uneventful month, not much fowling was done due to it being very quiet on the marsh. January came around and again i joined motty for a flight, the pinks lifted and flew straight over us, i fired and the goose started to struggle, i gave it another barrel which brought it down, sent the dog on but unfortunally the pink was not picked, it had dissapeared. Another trip to Earith, this time completely flooded with only boat access which was very different to last time. Watching the duck flight on the ouse washes was very interesting, thousands of them. February came around and i managed to get the last 7 days of the season off work. A few shots had been taken on the weekend without any lucky. washwildfowler kindly showed me a new spot on the marsh. DerbyshireDale got blown over in the strong wind which was a little funny My final spot of luck came this morning: Decided to get up early and take a walk to the furthest part of the marsh in the hope that there where a few greylag knocking about, took my newly acquired 10 bore with him. Took a steady walk down and got into postition beside a big creek, only to notice two more fowlers joining me on this one bit, they saw me and dropped back ( when walking back i found out it was a friend of mine ).6 greylag came straight over the top of me, didnt see them untill they where 50 yards away and straight in from of me so they went on unharmed. Sat back listing and watching the waders and seagulls getting up. Decided to take a photo or two and have a cuppa, just as i am taking a photo, two teal pop up in front, now i could have easily dropped the camera and had a shot, but it'd have been a tricky shot and at £3.90 a shot i decided to leave them for next season. Sat back and watched the tide get up and saw the odd duck flighting about.Just as the tide was reaching its highest, the brent decided to lift. Sat listening to them when i saw a goose out the corner of my eye, that was no brent. A single canada, grabbed the 10 and swung round onto the goose, bang, missed, bang, folded the canada perfect. Sent dog but had to go and give her a hand to get it out of the creek as it was a small deep creek and she couldnt quite get it. I put my gun away after that and called it a season.walking off found the other two fowlers and stopped for a chat. The only 3 fowlers on the marsh and we all wanted to be in the same place! And thats that for another season, i may not have shot as many ducks or geese as some people, but i have spent alot of time on the shore, seen alot of sights and enjoyed myself. I've fowled with some good people and had a laugh. Watching Tony Gs lab weave through decoys on Earith without getting snagged up once to retrieve a teal for me was probably the best bit of dog work i saw all season! The worst bit of dog work was loosing a canada shot by barrold on the washes, i just could not get the dog to swim across the river! See you all on the 1st! Clad you had an enjoyable season.
