Cyber
Hi everyone, I desperatly wish to get some permission to shoot on land around my area (only with airgun and later on in the year possibly with shotguns). I have done a search on yell.com to find farms etc in my area and was wondering whether you think I would have a better success rate if I visited the farms in person or if I wrote to them including my telephone number etc for them to contact me if they accepted my offer?? (a letter similar to the one pinned in this section) I don't want to go out with my rifle into the woods or anything like that as I don't have the required permission and I don't personally want to risk it. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks :look:
pin
Face to face, smart ish (not cammo), try and find out the name of the farmer/landowner and be polite - take some cards with your basc (or other insurance) details, name and numbers and if you get knocked back leave a card and ask if its ok to call back another time. Try and find land where you can see damage by rabbits, or where you see them in numbers and ask if the farmer wants a hand controlling them. Can't beat door knocking :look: Definitely don't "risk it", being where you shouldn't with an air rifle is classed as armed trespass and isn't something you want on your record, forget owning a shotgun if you get caught. That's without mentioning how unpleasant it is having several MP5's pointed at you
luckytrigger
Face to face definatley best in my opinion. First shoot is the hardest to get but once you have it there is no looking back :look: As Pin has already said a smart appearance does help. Good luck .. Cyber
Well i definately don't want to be risking it. especially with what you have just said pin, I bety that would be a scary experience to remember!! I am definately thinking about geting my sg licence later this year aswell. When you say ''dress smart'' what exactly do you mean? You mean smart trousers and a shirt or smart jeans with a smart t-shirt/jumper?? Sorry if that is a stupid question but like I say, I am really desperate to get out there and gain some decent shooting permission. Thanks again!! :look:
pin
Just not cammo stuff, opinion on here is divided on how to dress, I wouldn't put your best suit on but equally I wouldn't turn up looking scruffy Getting someone to trust you on their land with a gun is asking them to make a bunch of decisions about you and when they don't know you and have never met you before, first impressions count. I know a lot of folk like to go knocking right from work, I don't suppose it can hurt. I don't remember the poster but someone on here made a really good point, if you go when you could shoot right away if you get permission - definitely take your kit with you in case he wants you to "gerron 'em lad" straight away :look:

Cyber
Another small related question, I haven't at the moment got insurance. Who would be best (and cheapest) to go with? Is Basc any good. I have heard there are cheaper options though?? Thanks again :look:
Axe
If you purely just want cheap insurance go through the list I have posted at the bottom of the Forum Links, pinned in the welcome section. However, I would strongly recommend that you join one of the associations and help to support shooting. Personally I would join BASC, they have always been very helpful and are seen to be the voice of shooting.
Cyber
Thanks for that AXE, I have been looking at the benefits for BASC and they do seem to be really good and would cover me for all sorts. I will sort it out next week! Thanks again :look:
pin
If its just air gun you want, there is insurance provided by BASA (british airgun shooting association) which is affiliated to the BASC in some way. Google it, a bit cheaper but has what you want. For the money saved I wouldn't bother personally (compared to BASC) but its about choice so I am letting you know about it so you can choose
