JDog
There seems to be birds everywhere at the moment, but a deathly still day was never going to be the right conditions for shooting very many. There were 300 birds on the first field when I got there, 300 flew off and none returned in the next forty minutes so a halt was called in that particular venue. Another rape field some distance away on the same estate had at least the same number on it. These too were pushed off and none returned within half an hour so away I went looking for a more cooperative flock. Another two rape fields were glassed showing a feeding flock of about 200 birds. These headed off into the distance never to return. In desperation I took a net and the rotary and set up a rudimentary hide along a belt of trees along which a few birds were flying. The odd thing here is that a very high percentage of birds flying anywhere near the rotary decoyed very well and in an hour and a half I got through two boxes of cartridges and thoroughly enjoyed myself. All of the pigeon's crops were empty apart from a couple which had rape leaves in them.
