Reggie, there is a sightron 6.5-24x50 for sale on eBay which is as new. I can recommend that particular scope as it is the same on I use on my 223, plus as it is a uk sold scope you/your son get a lifetime guarantee as it's transferable. I have also just brought a new sightron stac 3.5-17x56 which again is a top scope. Also have a look on uk varminting forum as there was some sightron scopes for sale on there, you won't go far wrong with a sightron scope.

The reticle in both my sightrons are are very fine and sometimes can ge lost. The new scope I have does have a illuminated dot which does help if things get lost. The glass is very good generally under a lamp, I also use mine with night vision and don't have any problems with that but again the reticle can sometimes get lost but it's nothing that I would say should put you off.

The problem with buying bargain scopes from the USA now is that the laws have been changed over there owing to paranoid reaction to terrorism. The US establishment doesn't want high-mag scopes which could be used against their invaders and crusaders --i.e. their troops. That's why MANY scope and firearms dealers will not export. Those that do risk prosecution by sending certain firearms paraphernalia over here will also involve the UK/European buyer in any FBI inquiries. Some chicken-**** US dealers won't even send a harmless plastic/wooden stock...

cottonseed,

The rules haven't changed. The ITAR requirements are still the same- no export of military optics (night vision) without an export permit. The problem is that most retailers don't want the hassle of shipping internationally as it makes up such a small percentage of sales but a larger percentage of hassle. The smaller retailers (mom and pop shops) are the best bet as they hand process each order.

Strictly speaking anything over x4 magnification requires a state department export license which costs $250, usually arranged by a federal firearms dealer.

So, you run the risk of it getting seized if it gets inspected at customs leaving the US by post/courier. Good work getting it through though, your luck held!

As mentioned most US companies won't ship anything on the controlled list for this reason, plus due to poor wording of the controlled list many accessories are a bit of a grey area so again they won't ship as they risk big fines, loss of licenses and even jail time, federal laws are not to be trifled with.
