prescription shooting glasses

hi folks, im not the best of shots with my shotgun and have always put it down to my being utterly useless but my regular shotoing partner has for some time said he thinks my glasses are the problem as their quite narrow only being about 30mm tall but i never thought anything of it but i went for a round of dtl yesterday and after having struggled more than usual one of the ground owners spent some time with me.. my guns not a trap gun so i know that effects it but he had me holding my sporting gun and his trap gun correctly and looking into his eye and between us we worked out that with a perfect mount im only using a corner of my lens so about 80% or more of my vision when on a target is complete blur (i have really bad eyes) which when looking for a moving target can prove a problem as i tend to lift my head from the gun to find it.

so it looks like so that i can see correctly im mounting the gun wrong which is where my problems come, part of which is lifting my head from the stock so he sugegsted i get different glasses

as my eyes are stuffed i pay a lot extra for thin lenses so thought id ask if anyones had similar problems and if they got it sorted with a glasses change... would like to check first before i spend a few hundred quid on new glasses

I looked at prescription shooting glasses, or ones with prescription inserts, but decided on contact lenses instead. Daily disposables. That way I can wear any shooting glasses I want on on top. I think the lenses come to about £1.30 a day (Toric lenses for astigmatism) which I suppose would add up over time, but I only wear them when shooting. Never having worn lenses before, they are a bit of a revelation - almost like magic.

i wore contacts for donkies years both extended wear ones i wore for a month and dailies but my one eye dropped to a level where i couldnt get contacts for it.. i cant even have them lasered as my one eyes to bad. i did stick with the dailis for my mountain biking even though they where not strong enough but havent tried them for three years or so now, maybe ill give them another go

Speak to your optometrist. Contact lenses technology seems to be growing exponentially - they may well have something which works for you now. I was quite amazed to see they even have bifocal/multifocal contact lenses.

I wear variofocals which, like your glasses, don't have the vertical size necessary, when my cheek's on the stock I'm peering over the top of my glasses.

I bought a pair of Top Gun shooting glasses with the prescription lens insert. Specsavers said they couldn't put varifocal lens in, Vision Express just got on and did it.

I've been wearing these for a couple of years now and they work for me, I can see through them to the clay and write the score on the card after!

If you have a "fixed" prescription it should be even easier to fit.

I may well give wearing lenses permanently a go sometime - but my eyes aren't that bad (yet) -1.25 - so at the moment it's just for work, and driving, and shooting of course.

My wife is a -6, and can't see her hands in front of her face without her lenses (she wears hard gas permeable ones) - so I can sympathise with you with a -10!

One thing I found was that not all optometrists would offer everything available, so if they say 'no' that doesn't mean it isn't possible - just perhaps they don't sell that brand of lens which offers the features you require.

Check out this price comparison site if you want to buy online: http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/family/Cheap-Contact-Lenses/

They will want a current contact lens prescription and will contact your optometrist too. Buying contacts isn't like buying spectacles.
