kiffy
hi folks... i suspect this may be a bit of an stupid question.. but as einstein said "the only stupid question is the one left unasked" i have to ask i just bought an old bertetta 682 trap gun and although it is in wonderful condition the 3/4 and full tubes that where in the case (not sure they where in the case not the gun been as its a trap gun!) look a little worse for wear.. i degreased and cleaned them up but there is pitting around the interal rim / edge of the tube which got me thinking... do choke tubes wear out? strangford wildfowler
I would imagine so I was thinking they would be a bit like the barrels if not kept in good condition it would be pretty dangerous, But thats just my opinion and im no expert so im probably wrong. Guest cookoff013
yes chokes can wear out. older chokes were crimped style fixed, shooting steel will wear out the chokes faster. or in a smaller number of shots. they can wear and be different dimentions than before, but a serious ammount of shells need to have been used. maybe millions. most modern chokes / barrels are made with superior metal, harder steel, stronger and hard wearing. newer choketubes are made with harder steel for use with steel / tungsten. due to the newer metals i would state that choke wear and tear is not apparent with lead shot. Underdog
wonder if someone put steel through it! Someone once told me all Beretta chokes are steel proof??
ColinF
Are they definitely the chokes that originally came with the gun, or has a previous owner purchased second hand chokes at some point? Sounds odd that the chokes don't match the condition of the rest of the gun?
kiffy
not sure about the chokes origins.. the guy i bought it off only had it a few weeks ago and couldnt get on with it as its to big for him.. he bought it after its previous owner had passed away. when i swapped the chokes over this morning i did notice that one of the chokes that was in the gun is black and the other three are silver so theres deffinatly something going on there... their not bad enough that im worried anyway (or dont think i need to be worried) i have my 3/4 and full in place now with my usual coating of copper grease over them first... cant wait to try the gun out, was hoping to have gone today especially as the weathers so good but i kept my sensible head on and im spending it getting my garden back into shape as since i started shooting/hunting as much as i have the last year i let it go to **** Edited May 18, 2014 by kiffy
motty
I would say the chokes have just not been used much and have been neglected. The spare chokes I have for my trap gun have been left in a cupboard and have got rusty and damaged. If I sold the gun I would clean up those chokes as well as I could. The gun itself has been well looked after. This sounds like what has happened with your gun and chokes. I reckon those chokes will be absolutely fine and nothing to worry about. kiffy
they cleaned up ok and i have installed them... only other option is to buy new ones and apart from not knowing what chokes they are i cant afford it anyway... spent what is to me a fortune the past month or so buying this trap gun and a semi auto... i am now skint.. but have two nice guns to show for it
