Highlander
Lol, i'd like to see you cycle 43 miles to work and back Not saying I could but a chap who works at our Burgess Hill plant commutes from Littlehampton on a bike. Does a Rota 4 on 4 off system and cycles at least 2 of the days. Thats about 40 miles, each way. It can be done all it takes is the determination to do it. It is far easier to sit back and give reasons not to do something than it is to get up and do it. Bet he wouldn't do it with a load of pigeon kit on his back

Quite, is this bloke called Lance by any chance? 43 miles with laptop, mobile, suit etc in tow on a bike, twice a day. Nah. Don't know anyone who would, even if they could
Axe
Snakebite, respect where its deserved I admire your enthusiasm. But your mate is just plane bonkers mad cycling from Littehampton to Haywards Heath and back.
Dr W
As has already been mentioned surely the simpliest way is to remove road tax and increase tax at the pump rather than forcing everyone to install black boxes and all the necessary gadgetry to track however many cars. This raises revenue (what the govt wants anyway), makes people think if their journey is really necessary and avoids the need to be spied upon (most peoples fear of the new system). That way you pay for what you use, simple? Or am I missing something? Oh and more organised school crocodiles (where kids get picked up at fixed places and walk to school with their friends and an adult) would be a much better idea to get kids walking to school and stop the 4x4 at the school gates. SNAKEBITE
I'm not say everyone has to make all trips by public transport or by bike I am saying that everyone can make the effort to make less journies by car. The reason the government is doing this is because people refuse to use their cars less. The reason petrol prices are so high is because people refuse to use their cars less. Rather than do something about it they moan to high heaven but carry on paying through the nose. It might seem idealistic but if everybody made more effort then the government would not target th motorists anymore. We are our own worst enemies. Snakebite, respect where its deserved I admire your enthusiasm. But your mate is just plane bonkers mad cycling from Littehampton to Haywards Heath and back. I think he is mad, and I like cycling! However it is what he does, the bloke is a human dynamo by all accounts (I know of him rather than know him really well), he runs the Marathon for fun. The London to Brighton? he cycles to London, does the ride and then cycles home again. The man is a freak and not a general representation of society. I agree with that. However revenue has to be reinvested in roads and transport.
Dr W
I agree with that. However revenue has to be reinvested in roads and transport. Absolutely otherwise the money will just be swallowed up in the pension fund black hole, health service black hole, benfits black hole etc etc. How about removing VAT from bicycles, subsidising public transport and not building extra lanes on the M25 which just encourages more cars. SNAKEBITE
It's all about balance and common sense IMHO.
