I went squirrel shooting with the Kentucky smoothrifle, man there is a glut of squirrel this year around here. Think I am around 90 since spring!

I found myself near where some geese flight sometimes near dark so rummaged in my bag and found some bismuth.

Adding some wads.

Cracking job there underdog, went ferreting with my BP guns the other day but had no joy! Swear you chose the title "smooth rifle" as most don't understand what that means! Do you find you use it for air rifle type shooting Point and shoot, or as a shotgun swinging through?

James.

Bit of both mate. It points quite well as a shotgun but not in all cases! Mostly point and shoot though.

What load are you using for the gun? I have a .45 flintlock and still trying to figure it out.

Rifle or smoothbore?

Mine is a 45 smoothbore in percussion, I measure 5/8oz of shot, the same measure is then also used for the powder, a little less powder is fine though.

For a wad I just use a stack of over shot cards, a few of them, stamped from a 11mm leather punch bought from eBay. I sometime add some home made lube between the cards to keep the foul soft, this is melted candle wax and olive oil.

A couple of balls of news paper will also make wads. But watch out for them smouldering after shooting and starting a fire!

If your having trouble with a patched ball check the patches for any burning, any burning can be overcome with a wad or cards or leather wads acting as a firewall.

Also for good ball shooting do make sure the barrel is not touching the lock! Check for a dinged crown too.
