AJL
Well, I saw a flock of around 100 woodies on a farm near us and thought I might as well ask if there was any chance of a go. Astounded to hear there were only a couple of people who shot on the two rape fields the farmer is growing and he was OK with another. So I hightail it to buy a hide and some decoys and set up in hope rather than expectation. Jesus them things have got good eyesight, managed to get a couple in range but most stayed out around 50yards plus away. Shot at 6 all afternoon and missed em all! More practice needed so I think I'll go back later. Good fun despite hitting nowt! Better get learning the right patterns for the decoys too! Cranfield
It sounds as though your experience came under the heading of "pigeon scaring", rather than "pigeon shooting". Don't worry, we have all had that experience, some of us many times. Spend a bit of time watching the fields and see where the favoured areas are, also look for the signs of where the birds have been. As the rape gets higher , the pigeons will stay on the shorter stuff that is sprouting from the plants they have eaten before. If you put your decoys and hide where the birds want to be, you will get results.
AJL
Thanks Cranfield Just come back in after a couple more hours I had spare which I filled with sitting in the hide again. The birds are still not coming in and I swear they know how far a gun can shoot!. Having said that I missed a few which I should have shot late on coming into roost, the picture looked as big as a bin lid but I still have the habit of stopping swinging and missing behind. Anyway, the sniper in me picked one out of a tree some distance away. Took him by surprise but not as much it surprised me. Thought about eating it but I think I'll freeze it and use as a decoy next week (or tomorrow). Just good to be out in the open air! Paul in North Lincs.
its also worht mentioning that its best to remain motionless and only commit to the shot at the very last second!!!!
