Kes
A flock of upwards of 50 woodies passed over me heading almost due west whilst I was walking the dog earlier, in the garden. They came from almost due east and perhaps it indicates bad weather in eastern europe ? No local flocks at present - simply none at all - these were on a mission and flying strongly. There is no local flightline either. Makes me wonder whether we are due some bad weather soon ? Tried posting this before and it didnt seem to 'register'. However, here it is again - apologies if there is any duplication. Edited October 11, 2014 by Kes
goober
Seems early, but could be the start of this years pigeon migration(birds from Europe travelling through to Spain/Portugal). I usually start to see numbers end of October/first 2 weeks of November. They only flight first few hours of light usually.
fenboy
I have seen plenty of flockes between 500 - 2000 birds recently , its quite the norm for them to be flocking up at this time of year. When Motty shot with me last week he was having 200 + all going into the decoys at the same time
Kes
I've seen a map of the different migration routes but I have never experienced it this early, this far north (top of north wales but in England)

I'm not of the opinion that the local birds flock up, more that the flocks we see are ones migrating, on the way through. Like you, its first light through to late morning. Just waiting to see it start, its quite a sight Edited October 11, 2014 by turbo33
goober
Yes,quite a sight to see when the big flocks pass through. It will be interesting to see if these are the first groups passing.Hopefully Kes,you'll keep us upto date. This year we should get more feedback on their routes,a few PW members reported sitings last year.

figgy
Noticed a few very high flighting birds my way this afternoon heading east. These were around 120 yards up, only looked as a ballon with something attached went over when shooting overhead clays. Had to look twice to make sure they were pigeons that high.
